Traffic-Controlled Rate-Monotonic Priority Scheduling of ATM Cells

چکیده
Future integrated services networks are expected to carry various types of traac including real-time packet video for which stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements must be met. In this paper, we propose a cell multiplexing scheme for providing real-time communication services in point-to-point ATM networks. Our scheme is simple enough to be used in high-speed ATM networks, yet reasonably eecient in terms of accommodating channel requests. The scheme employs the leaky bucket model as the input traac description model and regulates the input traac at User Network Interface (UNI) to comply with the input traac spec-iication. Inside the network ATM switches provide bounded local delays to individual cells using a traac controller and a non-preemptive rate-monotonic priority scheduler.

Fast Admission Control for Rate Monotonic Schedulers
Rate monotonic traffic scheduling algorithm had been shown [1] to be the optimal static priority assignment scheme. The system model studied in [1] can be considered (although not realistic) as a preemptive multiplexer which accepts constant bit rate connections that generate packets periodically. The multiplexer adopts a service discipline such that a lower priority packet can be preempted at ...
متن کاملPriority Scheduling and Buffer Management for ATM Traffic Shaping
The impact of buffer management and priority scheduling is examined in stressful scenarios when the aggregate incoming traffic is higher than the output link capacity of an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) traffic shaper. To simultaneously reduce cell loss and extreme delay behavior for two or more classes of service, we show that a dynamic priority scheme is required. We propose a scheduling a...
متن کاملOn Priority Scheduling Algorithm at ATM Switches with Multi-Class Output Buffers
In this paper, we present a priority scheduling algorithm at ATM switches with multi-class output buffers in which the service rate of each class buffer is dynamically adjusted. The service rate is computed periodically by a control scheme. We derive the design formulas of the control scheme to ensure that each class buffer occupancy converges to its desired operating point related to QoS requi...
متن کاملA Performance Evaluation of Buffer Management and Scheduling for ATM- GFR Using TCP
Among the various categories of ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) service, ABR (Available Bit Rate) and UBR (Unspecified Bit Rate) have been introduced to support data traffic (such as TCP). GFR (Guarantee Frame Rate) is the current proposed ATM service to provide better performance for data traffic over ATM. The aim of this paper is two-folded. Firstly, we characterise the major research issues...
متن کاملReal-Time Transport of MPEG Video with a Statistically Guaranteed Loss Ratio in ATM Networks
ÐUnlike deterministic real-time communication in which excessive resources may be required for aabsoluteo performance guarantees, statistical real-time communication seeks to achieve both probabilistic performance guarantees and efficient resource sharing. This paper presents a framework for statistical real-time communication in ATM networks, providing delay-guaranteed transport of MPEG-coded ...
