چکیده
Hubert Haider’ primary goal in his latest book is to establish a universal constraint on the branching structure of Language: there are only right branching structures and their mirror image—left branching ones—do not exist at all. Through this strong proposal, Haider seeks to shed light on what he considers a universal, inviolable aspect of the architecture of grammar, thus contributing to the debate on the core properties of human language. According to Haider, cross linguistic variation between VO, OV and “Type III” languages follows directly from the interaction between this unchangeable “basic branching constraint” (BBC) and a directionality parameter that defines the identification relation between heads and their dependents. Apart from offering ample evidence through the use of a wide array of diagnostics between primarily Germanic OV and VO languages, Haider provides evolutionary justification for the existence of the BBC, along with a historical explanation for the split in the Germanic family between VO and OV. This review provides a summary of each chapter and assesses the strengths of Haider’s proposal.

Notes on Computational Aspects of Syntax
These notes cover the first part of an introductory course on computational linguistics, also known as MPRI 2-27-1: Logical and computational structures for linguistic modeling. The course is subdivided into two parts: the first, which is the topic of these notes, is focused almost exclusively on syntax, while the second part, taught this year by Philippe de Groote, covers semantics and discour...
متن کاملThe Magnetic Monopole Seventy - Five Years Later
Non-Abelian monopoles are present in the fully quantum mechanical low-energy effective action of many solvable supersymmetric theories. They behave perfectly as pointlike particles carrying non-Abelian dual magnetic charges. They play a crucial role in confinement and in dynamical symmetry breaking in these theories. There is a natural identification of these excitations within the semiclassica...

متن کاملCross-linguistic Influence at Syntax-pragmatics Interface: A Case of OPC in Persian
Recent research in the area of Second Language Acquisition has proposed that bilinguals and L2 learners show syntactic indeterminacy when syntactic properties interface with other cognitive domains. Most of the research in this area has focused on the pragmatic use of syntactic properties while the investigation of compliance with a grammatical rule at syntax-related interfaces has not received...
متن کاملEditorial Volume 6, Issue 1
The editor’s notes in our Journal have been so far a site for the clarification of the Journal’s policy and the task still continues. With an inclination towards solving our real world problems in language teaching (and literary studies, which I will discuss in the next issue of the Journal), we would like to take that the introduction of the concept of “life-world” to Social Sciences can be a ...
