Measuring Polarization with Dasi
نویسنده
چکیده
We describe an experiment to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) with the Degree Angular Scale Interferometer (DASI), a compact microwave interferometer optimized to detect CMB anisotropy at multipoles l ≃ 140 – 900. The telescope has operated at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole research station since 2000 January. The telescope was retrofit as a polarimeter during the 2000 – 2001 austral summer, and throughout the 2001 and 2002 austral winters has made observations of the CMB with sensitivity to all four Stokes parameters. The telescope performance has been extensively characterized through observations of artificial sources, the Moon, and polarized and unpolarized Galactic sources. In 271 days of observation, DASI has differenced the CMB fluctuations in two fields to an rms noise level of 2.8 μK.

Status of CMB Polarization Measurements from DASI and Other Experiments
We review the current status and future plans for polarization measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation, as well as the cosmology these measurements will address. After a long period of increasingly sensitive upper limits, the DASI experiment has detected the E -mode polarization and both the DASI and WMAP experiments have detected the TE correlation. These detections provide c...
متن کاملGHz polarimetric observations of the two fields imaged by the DASI experiment
We present results of polarization observations at 1.4 GHz of the two fields imaged by the DASI experiment (α = 2330, δ = −55◦ and α = 0030, δ = −55◦, respectively). Data were taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array with 3.4 arcmin resolution and ∼ 0.18 mJy beam sensitivity. The emission is dominated by point sources and we do not find evidence for diffuse synchrotron radiation even af...
متن کاملDasi Three-year Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization Results
We present the analysis of the complete 3-year data set obtained with the Degree Angular Scale Interferometer (DASI) polarization experiment, operating from the Amundsen-Scott South Pole research station. Additional data obtained at the end of the 2002 Austral winter and throughout the 2003 season were added to the data from which the first detection of polarization of the cosmic microwave back...
متن کاملCMB Polarimetry using Correlation Receivers with the PIQUE and CAPMAP Experiments
The Princeton IQU Experiment (PIQUE) and the Cosmic Anisotropy Polarization MAPper (CAPMAP) are experiments designed to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) on sub-degree scales in an area within 1◦ of the North Celestial Pole using heterodyne correlation polarimeters and off-axis telescopes located in central New Jersey. PIQUE produced the tightest limit on the CMB...
متن کاملDetection of polarization in the cosmic microwave background using DASI. Degree Angular Scale Interferometer.
The past several years have seen the emergence of a standard cosmological model, in which small temperature differences in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation on angular scales of the order of a degree are understood to arise from acoustic oscillations in the hot plasma of the early Universe, arising from primordial density fluctuations. Within the context of this model, recent meas...
