چکیده

Surface tension profiles in vertical soap films are experimentally investigated. Measurements are performed by introducing deformable elastic objets in the films. The shape adopted by those objects once set in the film is related to the surface tension value at a given vertical position by numerically solving the adapted elasticity equations. We show that the observed dependency of the surface tension versus the vertical position is predicted by simple modeling that takes into account the mechanical equilibrium of the films coupled to previous thickness measurements.

”Young” soap films

If we pull out rapidly a metallic frame out of a surfactant solution, we arrive at a ”young” soap film with relatively simple features, as noticed first by Lucassen. The weight of the film is equilibrated by a vertical gradient of surface tension. At each level, the local solution concentration c(z) equilibrates with the local monolayers, of surface concentration Γ(z). A detailed analysis of th...

Soap Bubbles: Part 1

love soap bubbles. They're beautiful, delicate, and though they live only briefly, it's a glorious moment. They float on the air, brilliant colors wobbling over their surface, and when they pop into nothingness, it's just an opportunity to make more bubbles! This issue and next I'll talk about the chemistry, physics, and computer graphics of soap bubbles. Here I'll focus on the physics of soap ...

Modeling Draining Flow in Mobile and Immobile Soap Films.

A mathematical model is constructed to describe the two-dimensional flow in a vertical soap film that is draining under gravity. An asymptotic analysis is employed that uses the long-wave or "lubrication" approximation. The modeling results in three coupled partial differential equations that include a number of dimensionless input parameters. The equations are solved numerically. The three fun...

Stabilizing the Advancing Front of Thermally Driven Climbing Films.

As known from thermodynamic principles, the surface tension of a liquid decreases with increasing temperature. This property can be used to force a liquid film to climb a vertical substrate whose lower end is held warmer than the top. The vertical gradient in surface tension generates a surface shear stress that causes the liquid film to spread upward spontaneously in the direction of higher su...

Double Bubbles Sans Toil and Trouble: iscrete Circulation-Preserving Vortex Sheets for Soap Films and Foams

Simulating the delightful dynamics of soap films, bubbles, and foams has traditionally required the use of a fully three-dimensional manyphase Navier-Stokes solver, even though their visual appearance is completely dominated by the thin liquid surface. We depart from earlier work on soap bubbles and foams by noting that their dynamics are naturally described by a Lagrangian vortex sheet model i...
