چکیده

EXTENDED ABSTRACT A significant increase in pesticide use has increased concerns about potentially adverse effects on human health and the environment. The study aimed to explore the effects of exposure to pesticides on the liver function and acetycholinesterase levels in serum (AChES) and red blood cells (AChER) of 100 male participating in agricultural work ranging in age between 20 and 60 years with mean age 37.11±9.3. One hundred males matched for age and socio economic status were recruited as a control group to compare levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspirate aminotransferase (AST), bilriubin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total protein, AChES and AChER. The results indicate that AST, ALT and ALP were significantly (P<0.05) increased in pesticide-exposed workers compared with control. There was also a highly significant (P<0.01) decrease in direct bilirubin and AChEE among male agriculture workers compared with controls. At 10 <50 times of pesticides applications there was a significant decrease (P<0.05) in AChEE and increase in AST, ALT and ALP activity among exposed group. However, there was a negative correlation between AST, ALT, direct bilirubin, and AChES and age among control group and a positive correlation between ALT, and AST and age among exposed group. According to the number of pesticide application, there was a positive correlation between AST, ALP, Total and direct bilirubin and number of pesticide application. Agricultural villages in Egypt require more attention to increase the percentage of literacy among males and raise their health awareness.

Cholinesterases Enzymes Activities as Biomarkers of Farm Workers Exposed to Organophosphates in Two Communities of Khuzestan, Iran

Organophosphate (OPs) compounds are widely used in intensive agriculture to improve production, protect crops and control diseases vectors. The main mechanism of toxicity of OPs is the inhibition of the Cholinesterase enzymes. In this study the acetylcholinestrase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and specific acetylcholinestrase (SAChE) activities as potential biomarkers of exposure to OPs ...

Effects of Pesticides on Male Reproductive Functions

Exposure to pesticides could be one of the contributing cause to the falling sperm counts and rising levels of male infertility. Adverse effects of pesticides in the environment first received widespread attention in the 1960s. However, only recently it has been postulated that long term, low exposure of these chemicals are increasingly linked to human health effects such as immuno-suppression,...

Assessment of Health Effects Related to Organophosphate Pesticides Exposure Using Blood Cholinesterase Activity as a Biomarker in Agricultural Area at Nakhon Nayok Province, Thailand

This study aims to assess health effects caused by organophosphate pesticides exposure among farmers (n=35) and non-farmers (n=35) in Sisa Krabue sub-district, Ongkharak district, Nakhon Nayok province. The research design of this study was a cross-sectional study during pesticide application period from January to March 2013. Questionnaire and Test-mate ChE (Model 400) for blood cholinesterase...

Cytogenetic analysis of Pakistani individuals occupationally exposed to pesticides in a pesticide production industry.

Although several cytogenetic biomonitoring studies on workers exposed to pesticides have been reported, there is only limited information on this topic from developing countries where pesticides have been widely used over the years. People in developing countries are at higher risk from exposure, due to poor working conditions and a lack of awareness of the potential hazards during manufacturin...

Influence of exposure to pesticides on serum components and enzyme activities of cytotoxicity among intensive agriculture farmers.

Although the effects of acute pesticide poisoning are well known for the pesticides most currently used, hardly any data exist on health effects after long-term low-dose exposures. Major unresolved issues include the effect of moderate exposure in the absence of poisoning. The increased utilization of pesticides other than organophosphates makes it even more difficult to find associations. In t...
