Directed polymers in a random medium: a variational approach
نویسنده
چکیده
A disorder-dependent Gaussian variational approach is applied to the problem of a d dimensional polymer chain in a random medium (or potential). Two classes of variational solutions are obtained. For d < 2, these two classes may be interpreted as domain and domain wall. The critical exponent ν describing the polymer width is ν = 1 (4−d) (domain solution) or ν = 3 (d+4) (domain wall solution). The domain wall solution is equivalent to the (full) replica symmetry breaking variational result. For d > 2, we find ν = 12 . No evidence of a phase transition is found for 2 < d < 4: one of the variational solutions suggests that the polymer chain breaks into Imry-Ma segments, whose probability distribution is calculated. For d > 4, the other variational solution undergoes a phase transition, which has some similarity with B. Derrida’s random energy models.

Testing a Variational Approach to Random Directed Polymers
The one dimensional direct polymer in random media model is investigated using a variational approach in the replica space. We demonstrate numerically that the stable point is a maximum and the corresponding statistical properties are for the delta correlated potential in good agreements with the known analytic solution. In the case of power-law correlated potential two regimes are recovered: a...

We develop a new variational scheme to approximate the position dependent spatial probability distribution of a zero dimensional manifold in a random medium. This celebrated 'toy-model' is associated via a mapping with directed polymers in 1+1 dimension, and also describes features of the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition. It consists of a pointlike 'interface' in one dimension subje...
متن کاملA variational study of directed polymers in disordered media with short-range correlations
A variational method that allows for replica-symmetry breaking is applied to directed polymers in an (N + 1)-dimensional disordered medium. The noise studied here has gaussian correlations, i.e. it is short-ranged. In dimensions N < 2, the variational scheme yields only a strong-coupling phase and anomalous diffusion; while in dimensions N > 2 it shows weakand strong-coupling phases but no anom...

We discuss variational formulas for the law of large numbers limits of certain models of motion in a random medium: namely, the limiting time constant for last-passage percolation and the limiting free energy for directed polymers. The results are valid for models in arbitrary dimension, steps of the admissible paths can be general, the environment process is ergodic under spatial translations,...
متن کاملOverlap, disorder, and directed polymers: A renormalization group approach.
The overlap of a d + 1 dimensional directed polymer of length t in a random medium is studied using a Renormalization Group approach. In d > 2 it vanishes at Tc for t → ∞ as t Σ where Σ = [ d−1 3−2d ] d z and z is the transverse spatial rescaling exponent. The same formula holds in d = 1 for any finite temperature and it agrees with previous numerical simulations at d = 1. Among other results w...
