Basal Ganglia: Mechanisms for Action Selection
نویسنده
چکیده
The basal ganglia are an interconnected circuit of foreand midbrain nuclei common to all extant vertebrates, including the lamprey, which diverged from the main vertebrate line approximately 560MYA.Moreover, there are analogous structures in birds and bony fish. The preservation of this circuit implies a crucial operation that solves a problem common to all vertebrates. While many functions for the basal ganglia have been proposed, our current best theory to unify these ideas is that this circuit solves the common problem of action selection. Informally put, this is the problem of how to decide what to do next.

An embodied model of action selection mechanisms in the vertebrate brain
In previous research we have demonstrated a computational model of the intrinsic circuitry of the vertebrate basal ganglia based on the proposal that these central brain structures play an important role in action selection. The current work embeds this model within the control architecture of a Khepera mobile robot allowing action selection between multiple behaviors styled on some of the home...
متن کاملA Neurocomputational Model of Learning to Select Actions
We present an extension of a schema-based architecture for action selection, where competition between schemas is resolved using a variation of a neuroanatomically detailed model of the basal ganglia. The extended model implements distinct learning mechanisms for cortical schemas and for units within the basal ganglia. We demonstrate the functionality of the proposed mechanisms by applying the ...
متن کاملTransient and steady-state selection in the striatal microcircuit
Although the basal ganglia have been widely studied and implicated in signal processing and action selection, little information is known about the active role the striatal microcircuit plays in action selection in the basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical loops. To address this knowledge gap we use a large scale three dimensional spiking model of the striatum, combined with a rate coded model of the ...
متن کاملThe Role of the Basal Ganglia in Discovering Novel Actions
Our interest is in the neural circuitry which supports the discovery and encoding of novel actions. We discuss the significant existing literature which identifies the basal ganglia, a complex of subcortical nuclei, as important in both the selection of actions and in reinforcement learning. We discuss the complementarity of these problems of action selection and action learning. Two basic mech...
متن کاملAdaptive Motivation in a Biomimetic Action Selection Mechanism
In this paper, we extend a basal ganglia action selection model with an adaptive motivational system. We evaluate the resulting model in a minimal survival task, where the adaptive motivational system is used to take the resource density in the environment into account. We show that the model exhibits an increased decisional autonomy, which allows the robot to behave more economically when poss...
