چکیده

This paper presents a framework for automatic pedestrian and motor vehicle classification in a streetcrossing safety surveillance system. The proposed method is a coarse to fine classification approach divided into two branches. The moving objects are detected, tracked and clustered into fast moving and slow moving categories according to a motion speed estimation method. This approach is applicable to identify motor vehicles and further differentiate cars from scooters using width and shape features. The second part identifies slow moving objects. We improved the Recurrent Motion Image (RMI) algorithm to sort out the pedestrians due to their high RMI value. Haar-like features and the Adaboost algorithm are then employed to distinguish between pedestrians and scooters. Cars and scooters are identified using the object aspect ratio (AR) and area feature. The experimental results show that the recognition rate for 320 objects achieved 92.5%. The proposed system is promising for application to the traffic monitoring surveillance system.

An Assessment of the Impact of Pedestrian Refuge Islands on Vehicle Speed Changes and Pedestrian Safety: Case Study in Tehran

Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users. Speed of vehicles is considered as one of the major causes of danger for pedestrians crossing the street. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to devise suitable solutions to reduce speed of vehicles. One of these solutions is installation of Pedestrian Refuge Islands (PRI) in very wide midblocks. With regard to fluctuations in pedestrian a...

Pedestrian Gap Acceptance Logit Model in Unsignalized Crosswalks Conflict Zone

Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users. For evaluating and modifying pedestrian safety in unsignalized crosswalks, the first important issue is to identify and explore factors affecting the interaction behavior of pedestrians andvehicles in conflict areas. By analyzing those factors and determining how they affect road user's behavior, we canrepresent the plans and proc...

How to keep children safe in traffic: find the daredevils early.

Crossing the street in front of oncoming vehicles poses serious danger to young children. But is each young pedestrian similarly at risk? The authors aimed to identify children who are particularly prone to making risky and potentially harmful crossing decisions. They used a simple game involving risk to classify 5- to 6-year-olds as risk takers or risk avoiders. Children classified as risk tak...

A model of pedestrians' intended waiting times for street crossings at signalized intersections

For the purposes of both traffic-light control and the design of roadway layouts, it is important to understand pedestrian street-crossing behavior because it is not only crucial for improving pedestrian safety but also helps to optimize vehicle flow. This paper explores the mechanism of pedestrian street crossings during the red-man phase of traffic light signals and proposes a model for pedes...

Crosswalk markings and the risk of pedestrian-motor vehicle collisions in older pedestrians.

CONTEXT Motor vehicles struck and killed 4739 pedestrians in the United States in the year 2000. Older pedestrians are at especially high risk. OBJECTIVE To determine whether crosswalk markings at urban intersections influence the risk of injury to older pedestrians. DESIGN Case-control study in which the units of study were crossing locations. SETTING Six cities in Washington and Califor...
