The Missing X-rays in Sgr A*: Evidence for a Supermassive Black Hole in the Galactic Center

چکیده
We present a simple argument that the missing x-ray flux from the Galactic Center source Sgr A* ist not evidence against – as claimed by Goldwurm et al. 1994 – but rather indirect evidence for the presence of a supermassive black hole. The radio spectrum provides a strict lower limit for the size of Sgr A* (R > 3 · 10cm). A more compact source would be completely synchrotron self-absorbed. This size is 10 times larger than a stellar-mass black hole, yet the bolometric radio luminosity is comparable to or even larger than the x-ray luminosity where matter accreting onto a stellar-mass black hole would inevitably radiate the bulk of its luminosity. Hence, either the bulk of the accretion power is radiated in the UV (where the limits are higher), or the accretion has to stop at the radio-scale to avoid producing x-rays brighter than the radio emission. Both would be a natural consequence of a supermasive black hole with

متن کاملA Strongly Magnetized Pulsar within Grasp of the Milky Way’s Supermassive Black Hole
The center of our Galaxy hosts a supermassive black hole, Sagittarius (Sgr) A∗. Young, massive stars within 0.5 pc of Sgr A∗ are evidence of an episode of intense star formation near the black hole a few Myr ago, which might have left behind a young neutron star traveling deep into Sgr A∗’s gravitational potential. On 2013 April 25, a short X-ray burst was observed from the direction of the Gal...
متن کاملThe X-ray Ridge Surrounding Sgr A* at the Galactic Center
We present the first detailed simulation of the interaction between the supernova explosion that produced Sgr A East and the wind-swept inner ∼ 2-pc region at the Galactic center. The passage of the supernova ejecta through this medium produces an X-ray ridge ∼ 9 to 15 to the NE of the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). We show that the morphology and X-ray intensity of this featu...

This letter presents the first results of an observational campaign to study the Galactic Centre with INTEGRAL. The mosaicked images obtained with the IBIS/ISGRI coded aperture instrument in the energy ranges 20–40 and 40–100 keV, give a yet unseen view of the high-energy sources of this region in hard X-and gamma-rays with an angular resolution of 12 ′ (FWHM). We report on the discovery of a s...
