Radioactive iodine therapy in thyroid disorders.

چکیده

Radioactive iodine (1311) has a part to play in the therapy of two thyroid disorders, carcinoma and thyrotoxicosis, by virtue of the selective concentration of it which occurs in functioning thyroid cells. The latter represent the only significant site of concentration of the iodide ion in the body, this occurring because of the necessity to incorporate iodine into the molecule of the thyroid hormone thyroxine. "` If, therefore, the gland is" presented with 1311, a source of ionizing radiation is placed within the thyroid gland, and the physical properties -of 131I, the commonly used isotope, are such that there is little tissue irradiation except within the gland. The greater part of the biological effect of the radiation'is due to the beta particles emitted by the source, and as these have only a range of a few millimetres in tissue, there is little appreciable effect-elsewhere, unless, as in the treatment of thyroid carcinoma, the level of thyroid or tumour concentration is very low and appreciable radiation effects occur elsewhere.

An Unusual Case Report: Occurrence of Renal Cell Carcinoma, Basal Cell Carcinoma and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in a Case of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Treated with Radioactive Iodine

The standard therapy for thyroid cancer is total or near total thyroidectomy, followed by the administration of radioactive iodine for remnant ablation or residual disease. Patients with radioiodine therapy are predisposed to second malignant neoplasms in organs such as central nervous system (CNS), breast, prostate, kidney, bone marrow, salivary gland, and digestive tract. Exposure to carcinog...

Changes in salivary gland function following radioiodine therapy of thyroid diseases: A comparison of high-dose therapy for thyroid cancer and low-dose therapy for benign thyroid disease

Introduction: High-dose radioactive iodine therapy in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) may adversely affect the salivary gland function. This study is aimed to evaluate the effect of radioactive iodine (RAI) with dose of 100 mCi in DTC patients compared to lower doses of less than 30 mCi in hyperthyroid cases. Methods: Fifty four patients (13 men and 41 women) age: 42.3±14.3 (21-71) years w...

Radioactive Iodine Therapy and Glucose Tolerance

Radioactive iodine therapy is commonly used as an adjuvant therapy in follicular and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and in the treatment of Graves' disease (GD). The basis of this therapy is the accumulation of radioactive iodine by the sodium-iodide symporter (NIS) in the thyroid gland. Expression of NIS by extrathyroidal tissues such as islets of pancreas has been reported. Radioactive iod...

Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies in Non-Autoimmune Hyperthyroidism Treated with Radioactive Iodine.

Introduction: Earlier studies suggest increased serum levels of thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) in some cases with non-autoimmune hyperthyroidism. The aim of the study was to assess the incidence of hypothyroidism in patients with nodular toxic goitre and toxic adenoma at 12 months after radioactive iodine therapy in the relation to TPOAb levels. Patients & Measurements: The study compris...

A Peculiar Case of the Abscopal Effect: Radioactive Iodine Therapy Incidentally Palliating Marginal Zone Lymphoma

The abscopal effect is an extremely rare phenomenon occurring when irradiation or treatment of a primary tumor burden not only results in debulking of the targeted site but also reduces tumor size at distant sites from the intended treatment area. We present the abscopal effect occurring in a patient with low-grade marginal zone lymphoma who subsequently received radioactive iodine therapy for ...
