Abstract:

Background and purpose: One of the main challenges in orthodontic treatment is relapse after treatment and return of the teeth to its original position. Therefore, retainers are an essential part of orthodontic treatment. Fixed and removable retainers are commonly used in orthodontic retention. They prevent relapse and require patientchr('39')s cooperation in using them. This review study aimed at comparing fixed and removable retainers in orthodontic treatment. Materials and methods: Search was conducted for articles published between 2000 and 2020 in PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and Cochrane using the following keywords: relapse, retention, bonded, fixed, removable, orthodontics, and retainers.   Results: In terms of success rate, fixed retainers were found to be more effective in preventing relapse than removable retainers. No significant difference was reported between the average times required for effectiveness of the retainers. Removable retainers caused less anxiety and speech disorders than fixed retainers. Difficulty in maintaining hygiene is a major problem of fixed retainers which leads to plaque accumulation and periodontal diseases. No study was found to compare these retainers in terms of survival and failure rates, although they were reviewed separately. Conclusion: The choice of retainers depends on the type of orthodontic treatment, the patientchr('39')s condition, and the duration of its use.

The effects of fixed and removable orthodontic retainers: a systematic review

OBJECTIVE In the view of the widespread acceptance of indefinite retention, it is important to determine the effects of fixed and removable orthodontic retainers on periodontal health, survival and failure rates of retainers, cost-effectiveness, and impact of orthodontic retainers on patient-reported outcomes. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was undertaken based on a defined electro...

Bonded anterior orthodontic retainers.

Craniofacial growth occurs throughout adulthood for both orthodontically treated and untreated patients.1,2 One aspect of skeletal change is a decrease of the intercanine dimension with an increase in anterior tooth irregularity.3,4 Other factors may contribute to this misalignment, such as the anterior component of force—a vertical occlusal force on posterior teeth creating a horizontal vector...

Removable thermoplastic appliances as orthodontic retainers--a prospective study of different wear regimens.

The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate and compare stability after 6 months of Essix retainer use. Patients' perceptions of wearing the retainer were also evaluated. A total of 69 patients, 53 girls and 16 boys [mean age 15.7 years, standard deviation (SD) 1.96], were included in the study and randomized into two groups with different wear regimens; full-time wear for 3 months and th...

Evaluation of Histological Impacts of Three Types of Orthodontic Fixed Retainers on Periodontium of Rabbits

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Fixed retainers were developed to maintain incisor alignments after orthodontic treatments. Although the effects of fixed retainers on periodontal health are clinically studied, no studies have still evaluated the histological changes in the periodontium after the placement of thefixed retainers. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of customised ...

Effect of silver ion coating of fixed orthodontic retainers on the growth of oral pathogenic bacteria.

Titanium and stainless steel wires used for retainers in orthodontic procedures were coated with Ag ions and the effects of the coating on common oral pathogens and their pathogenicity were investigated. Two species of cariogenic and three species of periodontopathic bacteria were assessed. Biofilms of Streptococcus sobrinus and two VSC gases produced by P. gingivalis were also examined. Ag ion...
