Abstract:

Background: Activity of norA efflux pump is one of the antibiotic resistance mechanisms in ciprofloxacin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. In this study, the effect of Artemisia ciniformis extract on reducing the expression of norA efflux pumps gene in ciprofloxacin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates was studied. Materials and Methods: Ciprofloxacin resistant S. aureus isolates, were treated by different concentration of A. ciniformis extract. After extracting RNA and synthesizing cDNA, norA efflux pump expression was evaluated by Real Time PCR.  Results: There was significant decrease of norA efflux pump expression in ciprofloxacin-resistant S. aureus isolates treated by A. ciniformis extract (P<0.05). Also, a different expression of norA efflux pump gene was reported. Conclusion: It seems A. ciniformis extract as a natural inhibitor, had potential for suppression of norA efflux pump activity.

The Effect of Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) Extract on the Expression of norA Efflux Pump Gene in Clinical Strains of Staphylococcus aureus

The NorA efflux pump considered as one of the contributors to antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus strains. One of the challenges of the researchers is finding natural plant compounds with the ability to inhibit the pumps. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of thyme (Thymus vulgaris) extract on NorA efflux pump in ciprofloxacin-resistant strains of S. aureu...

The impact of Grammosciadium platycarpum Boiss. & Hausskn. extract on oqxA efflux pump gene expression in antibiotic resistant clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae using real time PCR

Background: Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the most important causes of nosocomial infections, especially wound infection after surgery. One of the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in K. pneumoniae strains, especially ciprofloxacin, is the presence of efflux pump. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-efflux activity of Grammosciadium platycarpum Boiss. & Hausskn. extrac...

Effects of synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles from Ziziphora clinopodioides on expression of the efflux pump genes of Staphylococcus aureus

Introduction: One of the important factors causing nosocomial infections is drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain, so correspondingly, having norA efflux pump is one of the bacterial's ability to generate drug resistance. Iron has been used as a nanoparticle with antimicrobial activity against bacteria. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of iron oxide nanoparticles synthe...
