Evaluate the effect of biodiesel and EGR system on diesel engine emissions

Authors

Abstract:

Vehicle Emission is one of the main causes of environmental damage. Vehicle engines produce carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbon (HC), Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and many other harmful substances. An investigation was conducted using a compression-ignition engine fuelled with different ratios of blends of diesel and biodiesel at different EGR rates. The effects of different ratios of fuel blends and EGR rate on the emission characteristics (unburned hydrocarbon (HC), nitric oxide (NO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2) were examined. The air-fuel equivalence ratio (λ), oil temperature and intake gas temperature were also analyzed. Results show that the different ratios of blends of diesel and biodiesel decrease HC emissions compared to those of the diesel fuel. The addition of biodiesel can increase NO, CO2 and O2 emissions compared with that of the diesel. EGR can reduce NO emissions in a compression-ignition engine fueled with diesel and biodiesel blends. The results also indicate that fuel consumption and air-fuel equivalence ratio were decreased by 19.2% and 72.9%, respectively, for 20% biodiesel blend with 20% EGR compared to diesel fuel without EGR. Intake gas temperature and oil temperature were also observed to increase by 87.5% and 6.2%, respectively, for 20% biodiesel blend with 20% EGR compared to diesel fuel without EGR.

Performance and Emissions of a Tractor engine operating on biodiesel-diesel blends with EGR

The influences of different diesel/biodiesel blends and EGR rate on brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), exhaust gas temperature, NO, HC, CO emissions, are studied and demonstrated. In this paper a four stroke direct injection, water cooled, diesel engine was used. Biodiesel either in neat form or as a blend with diesel fuel is extensively investigated to solve the twin problem of reduction ...

Experimental Studying the Effect of EGR Distribution on the Combustion, Emissions and Perforemance in a Turbocharged DI Diesel Engine

This paper presents the results of experimental work carried out to evaluate the distribution of cold and hot exhaust gas recirculation between cylinders in a DI diesel engine. The experiments have been conducted on a 3.99 liters turbocharged DI diesel engine under full load condition at 1900rpm in order to distinguish and quantify some effects of hot and cooled EGR with various rates on the EG...

Prediction and Comparison of the Effect of N-butanol and Ethanol Addition to the Biodiesel-diesel Fuel Mixture on the Performance and Emissions Characteristics of a Diesel Engine

The main objective of this research is to study the effects of n-butanol and ethanol addition to the biodiesel-diesel fuel mixture on the performance and emission characteristics of a CI engine. The experimental tests were performed on a diesel engine. The RSM (Response Surface Methodology) method was used to develop mathematical models based on experimental data. According to the results, the ...

Influence of Biodiesel from Egyptian Used Cooking Oils on Performance and Emissions of Diesel Engine

Due to diminishing petroleum reserves and the environmental negative effects of exhaust gases from diesel engines, alternative fuels for diesel engines are becoming increasingly important Egyptian waste cooking oils have special specifications because it expose to high temperatures during use for long hours. In the present experimental study, the performance and emissions of a four strokes, sin...

Diesel Engine Performance and Exhaust Emissions Using Cottonseed Oil Biodiesel

Non-road diesel engines are significant contributors to air pollution in the United States (USEPA, 2004). These engines emit particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and other pollutants. The Clean Air Non-road Diesel Rule was put in place to reduce emission levels from agricultural, construction, and industrial diesel powered equipment. This rule calls for a reduct...
