Abstract:

Background &Objective: Plaryngoscopy and tracheal intubation increase not only blood pressure and heart rate but also Bispectral Index (BIS) of the patients. In this study, hemodynamic and BIS changes were surveyed after tracheal intubation and during general anesthesia followed by mexiletine prescription . Materials & Methods: In this study, 50 patients aged between 20 and 60 who were candidates for orthopedic surgery of the upper limbs were surveyed. They were divided in two groups randomly. Two hours before induction of anesthesia,  case and control groups received mexiletine 200 mg as capsule and oral placebo, respectively. Systolic  and diastolic blood pressures ,heart rate, and BIS of both groups were compared before induction and intubation 1,3 and 10 minutes after intubation and immediately  , 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes  after  surgical incision. Results: There was not any significant differences in systolic and diastolic pressures of the two groups.  The heart rate was lower in mexiletine group compared to control group, 30 minutes after surgical incision and immediately after extubation (P<0.05). BIS was significantly more in mexiletine groupcompared to control group (p<0/05). Conclusion: It was revealed that  the hemodynamic changes after laryngoscopy and during general anesthesia were significantly lower in mexiletine group compared to the  control group. It`s suggested that the prescription of this drug leads to the increase of BIS after intubation and during general anesthesia.

Effect of a single dose of esmolol on the bispectral index to endotracheal intubation during desflurane anesthesia

BACKGROUND In this prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we investigated the effect of a single dose of esmolol on the bispectral index (BIS) to endotracheal intubation during desflurane anesthesia. METHODS After induction of anesthesia, 60 patients were mask-ventilated with desflurane (end-tidal 1 minimum alveolar concentration) for 5 min and then received either n...

Effect of landiolol on bispectral index and spectral entropy responses to tracheal intubation during propofol anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND beta1-Adrenoceptor antagonists suppress the haemodynamic and arousal responses to tracheal intubation. The Entropy Module shows two spectral entropy-based indices, response entropy (RE) and state entropy (SE). The difference between RE and SE (RE-SE) may reflect nociception during general anaesthesia. In the present study, we investigated the effect of landiolol on entropy indices in...

Hemodynamic changes following the administration of propofol to facilitate endotracheal intubation during sevoflurane anesthesia.

BACKGROUND The common intravenous anesthetic agent, propofol, is frequently reported to have negative inotropic and chronotropic effects. In the pediatric population, propofol is commonly used after inhalation induction to facilitate endotracheal intubation without the need for a neuromuscular blocking drug agent. In this setting, we have noted that propofol administration is commonly followed ...

COMPARISON OF HEMODYNAMIC CHANGES DUE TO INTRAVENOUS OXYTOCIN INFUSION DURING GENERAL AND SPINAL ANESTHESIA IN ELECTIVE CESAREAN SECTION

Background & Aims: Postpartum hemorrhage is one of the life-threatening complications after labor and cesarean section. Its prevalence is 6 percent. Metratonia is the most common cause of this complication. Some medications can prevent it. Oxytocin is the most common uterine vasoconstrictor and is used routinely after delivery for decreasing hemorrhage. The aim of this study is to compare hemod...

Evaluation of the Adequacy of General Anesthesia in Cesarean Section by Bispectral Index

Background: Awareness and recall, though not common, are the major hazards of general anesthesia, especially in Cesarean section (C/S) because of the absence of benzodiazepine and opioids for a significant time during anesthesia. In this study, the Bispectral Index (BIS), end-tidal isoflurane, and hemodynamic parameters were examined to evaluate the depth of the routine general anesthetic techn...
