FVCOM model

Authors

Abstract:

Chabahar Bay is a semi-closed and shallow bay in southeastern of Iran and is strongly affected by the monsoon conditions. The 3D FVCOM model was used to study the hydrodynamic conditions of Chabahar Bay. For this purpose, a horizontal grid with 6290 triangular elements and a vertical grid with 10 sigma layers were created. The model was implemented in baroclinic mode; NCEP data and HYCOM model outputs were used to account for open surface and boundary layer forces. Water level and flow velocity correlations show acceptable agreement with field data. The tidal bay is often semi-daily and mixed and the tidal range is 2.7 m. The flushing time of Chabahar Bay was calculated to be 6.7 days. The modeling results show; The vertically and annual average current velocity is 0.1 m/s and the rotation pattern is often anticyclonic.

Parallelization of the Fvcom Coastal Ocean Model

The Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) is a publicly available software package for simulation of ocean processes in coastal areas. The unstructured grid approach used in the model is highly advantageous for resolving dynamics in regions with complex shorelines such as estuaries, embayments, and archipelagos. A growing user community and a demand for large-scale, high resolution simulati...

Comparison of surface salinity of Persian Gulf water using field data and FVCOM numerical model

This paper investigates and estimates the surface salinity changes of the Persian Gulf using the FVCOM numerical model. Sea level salinity (SSS) is one of the important parameters in oceanographic studies. The Persian Gulf is a semi-closed and shallow sea, which is high in the Persian Gulf due to its low rainfall, salinity and water density. One of the limitations of this region is the lack of ...

Application and comparison of Kalman filters for coastal ocean problems: An experiment with FVCOM

[1] Twin experiments were made to compare the reduced rank Kalman filter (RRKF), ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), and ensemble square-root Kalman filter (EnSKF) for coastal ocean problems in three idealized regimes: a flat bottom circular shelf driven by tidal forcing at the open boundary; an linear slope continental shelf with river discharge; and a rectangular estuary with tidal flushing intert...
