Abstract:

Background and Aim: For effective treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), it is important to accurately diagnosis of AD and its earlier stage, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). One of the most important approaches of early detection of AD is to measure atrophy, which uses various kinds of brain scans, such as MRI. The main objective of the current research was to provide a computerized diagnostic system for early diagnosis of AD, using leraning machine algorithms, to help physicians. The proposed system diagnoses AD by examining the hippocampal atrophy of brain MRI images and increases the accuracy of the diagnosis. Materials and Methods: In this study, hippocampus was segmented from the other parts of the brain by using active contour and convolutional neural network and then, three groups of “Normal Controls: NC”, AD and MCI were classified by using the SVM classifier. Results: The proposed method has succeeded in classifying AD against NC with 98.77%, 98.74% and 97.96% in average for accuracy, sensitivity and specificity, respectively. Also in classification of MCI against NC, the mean accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of 96.14%, 96.23% and 88.21% were achieved, respectively. Compared with the nearest rival method, the proposed method showed improvement accuracy and sensitivity of classification AD from NC with 1.64% and 2.81% respectively. Also, in classification of MCI from NC it showed improvement for accuracy with 8.9% and sensitivity with 2.16%, respectively. Improving in results were due to the use of a modified ACM segmentation algorithm, the use of a combination of features extracted from hippocampal images and features already created by the ImageNet network, the removal of inappropriate features from the feature vector, and the use of deep Inception v3 network. Concolusion: Based on the results, the combination of polygon surrounding the hippocampus features and deep network features can be useful for detection of AD and MCI.

The Participation of Three Brain Tissues in Alzheimer’s disease Diagnosis from Structural MRI

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive and irreversible disease which gradually makes patients unable to do their daily routines. Although the present treatments can not cure the disease completely, its early detection can reduce symptoms and enhance the patients’ life quality. In the current literature, using the grey matter (GM) tissue which is known as an appropriate biomarker is highly c...

MRI Shows More Severe Hippocampal Atrophy and Shape Deformation in Hippocampal Sclerosis Than in Alzheimer's Disease

While hippocampal atrophy is a key feature of both hippocampal sclerosis (HS) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), the pathology underlying this finding differs in these two conditions. In AD, atrophy is due primarily to loss of neurons and neuronal volume as a result of neurofibrillary tangle formation. While the etiology of HS is unknown, neuron loss in the hippocampus is severe to complete. We comp...

P 3: The Study about MRI Images of Encephalitis and Diagnosis by Using the Software Ways

Introduction: Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain. Viral infections are the most common cause of the condition .Encephalitis can cause flu-like symptoms, such as a fever or severe headache. It can also cause confused thinking, seizures, or problems with senses or movement. However, many cases of encephalitis result in only mild flu-like symptoms or even no symptoms. It's important to get ...

From heterogeneous patient measurements towards earlier diagnosis in Alzheimers disease

European funded project PredictAD has developed a decision support tool for objective diagnostics of Alzheimer’s disease. The tool compares measurements of a patient to measurements of other persons available in large databases and provides a simple index about the severity of the disease. The project has shown that the tool improves the accuracy of diagnosis and clinicians’ confidence about th...

Measurement of basal forebrain atrophy in Alzheimer's disease using MRI.

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the degeneration and loss of cholinergic neurones in the nucleus basalis Meynert, located within the substantia innominata at the ventral surface of the basal forebrain. An in vivo measure of morphological changes in the nucleus basalis Meynert would be of high relevance to better understand the structural correlate of cholinergic dysfunction in Alzheimer...

Segmentation of MRI Brain Images for Automatic Diagnosis

The goal of this work is to development an Image Processing technique to segment patterns from the MRI brain images. The main focus is to automate the segmentation of MRI images that will be fed to the diagnoses unit for automatic classification and report generation. This work also aims to enhancing the images for visual inspection by reducing noise and histogram equalization..
