Abstract:

This study was designed to determine the effects of parameters: temperature, pH and dKH on growth indices of Oscar fish (Astronotus ocellatus). For this purpose, in each aquarium, there was specific combinations of temperature, pH and dKH, using design of experiment with Design Expert 7.0, and in total 14 combinations or treatments, each with 3 repetitions and thus, 3 fishes were entered in each aquarium randomly. In timespan 1-30 days, the measurement of body weight and body length was done, and growth indices including: weight gain (WG) and length gain (LG) were identified. Studying of growth pattern showed that the best mathematical model to show the changes of growth indices was quadratic equation. Carbonate hardness had the most effects on weight changes. The optimum temperature was 23-26˚c, pH was 6.7-8.3 and dKH was 5-6. Growth pattern according to length gain, was quadratic equation. Carbonate hardness had the most effects and the optimum range was similar to optimum condition for weight gain.

buckling of viscoelastic composite plates using the finite strip method

Oscars, Astronotus ocellatus, have a dietary requirement for vitamin C.

We found that vitamin C is an essential nutrient for an Amazonian ornamental fish, the oscar (Astronotus ocellatus). This was demonstrated by the absence of L-gulonolactone oxidase activity, the enzyme responsible for the biosynthesis of vitamin C, in liver or kidney of oscars and by a feeding trial in which oscars without vitamin C dietary supplementation developed clinical deficiency signs. F...

Optimizing the Properties of Metakaolin-based (Na, K)-Geopolymer Using Taguchi Design Method

Geopolymer paste is an innovative construction material which shall be produced by chemical action of inorganic molecules. It is a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional Portland cement which is abundantly available worldwide. In this study, the influence of different alkaline activators (Na and K) on the mechanical and thermal behaviors of metakaolin-based geopolymer was inv...

Selectivity in regeneration of the oculomotor nerve in the cichlid fish, Astronotus ocellatus.

IT has long been considered a general rule for nerve regeneration that the reinnervation of skeletal muscle is nonselective. Regenerating nerve fibers are supposed to reconnect with one skeletal muscle as readily as another according to studies covering a wide range of vertebrates (Weiss, 1937; Weiss & Taylor, 1944; Weiss & Hoag, 1946; Bernstein & Guth, 1961; Guth, 1961, 1962, 1963). Similarly,...

The Naturally Occurring Accommodative Response of the Oscar, Astronotus ocellatus, to Visual Stimuli

Observation of the naturally-occurring accommodative response of a highly visual teleost species provides the opportunity to study its stimulus-response accuracy. A video recording system, linked to a computer digitizing program, was used to measure accommodative changes in lens position in the oscar, Astronotus ocellatus, in response to known food stimuli. The largest lens deviations occurred ...

Social isolation and aggressiveness in the Amazonian juvenile fish Astronotus ocellatus.

We tested the effect of social isolation on the aggressiveness of an Amazonian fish: Astronotus ocellatus. Ten juvenile fishes were transferred from a group aquarium (60 x 60 x 40 cm) containing 15 individuals (without distinguishing sex) to an isolation aquarium (50 x 40 x 40 cm). Aggressiveness was tested by means of attacks on and displays toward the mirror image. The behavior was video-reco...
