Properties, Application and Synthesis Methods of boron nitride Powder: A Review

author

Abstract:

h-BN is a multipurpose ceramic material, with exceptional properties and a wide area of application in industry. It is structurally similar to graphite and it resists oxidation to higher temperatures than graphite. It is used in powder form as a mold release agent in metal casting, as a high temperature lubricant or even in cosmetics. hBN can be shaped by hot-pressing and is used as molds or crucibles for liquid metal handling and as electrical insulator parts . Consumption of hBN has increased in the last decades as a result of its unique properties and its utilization in composite materials . hBN reduces the thermal expansion and friction coefficients, increases thermal conductivity and use temperatures of polymer matrix composites. hBN has also been widely used in ceramic matrix composites to improve thermal shock resistance and machinability . One of the uses of this material in the military industry is in the discussion of bullets and Khan light gun pillows that act as a friction and deviation reducer and increase the speed and point of a higher level as a coating on the surface of the bullet or Khan's gun barrel. Because of the high consumption of this ceramic, various inexpensive methods are under investigation. This paper covers a variety of methods for synthesizing hexagonal nitride powder with an emphasis on the carbetermal method and, in brief, the synthesis of other forms of boron nitride, such as hollow spheres, nanoparticles, nanoparticles, and two-dimensional nanostructures.

Theoretical comparison of thermodynamic parameters, NMR analysis, electronic properties of Boron Nitride and Aluminum Nitride nanotubes

In this research, geometrical structures of armchair single walled boron nitride nanotube (SWBNNT) and armchair single walled aluminum nitride nanotube (SWAlNNT) were optimized by Density Functional Theory (DFT) in the gas phase, both having the same length of 5 angstrom and n=9, m=9. B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory have been used to determine and compare electronic properties, n...

Boron Nitride Nanotube: Synthesis and Applications

Scientists have predicted that carbon’s immediate neighbors on the periodic chart, boron and nitrogen, may also form perfect nanotubes, since the advent of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in 1991. First proposed then synthesized by researchers at UC Berkeley in the mid 1990’s, the boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) has proven very difficult to make until now. Herein we provide an update on a catalyst-free m...

Microwave Synthesis of Boron Nitride Nanostructures

One dimensional boron nitride nanostructures promise many interesting applications in biomedical, semiconductor and hydrogen storage and other fields. We have synthesized Boron Nitride in various nanoforms by a high temperature solid state reaction between boric acid and urea in a commercial microwave furnace. The formation of boron nitride was established from the binding energies for boron an...

Mechanical properties of polycrystalline boron-nitride nanosheets

The first molecular dynamics (MD) study was conducted to explore mechanical-failure response of ultrafine grained single-layer boron-nitride films. We used MD simulations to construct relatively large molecular models of polycrystalline structures with random grain configurations. By applying uniaxial tensile loading, we then studied the grain size effect on the mechanical response of polycryst...
