Abstract:

Introduction: The aim of present study was to investigate the effects of royal jelly (RJ) on the number of Nissl-stained neurons in caudate putamen unit (CPU) and substantia nigra pars compacta (SNC) and the thickness of gray (TGm) and white matter (TWm) of cerebral and cerebellar cortex in male rats with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods: Seventy five Sprague-Dawley adults’ male rats were used. Rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: 1- control intact rats; 2- sham; rats received 0.02% ascorbic acid diluted in saline by CPU injection 3- PD induction without treatment; 4 and 5- PD induction + 100 or 200 mg/kg/day RJ for 21 days started 4 weeks after lesion induction. PD induction was carried out by unilateral injection of 6-hydroxydopamine in CPU. The apomorphine were done one week before lesion as well as, second, fourth and seventh weeks after lesion. Nissl-stained neurons of SNC and CPU were counted. The thickness of gray and white matter was measured by histomorphometry. Results: data showed that RJ has corrected net contralateral turns of PD. RJ at both doses significantly (P<0.05) increased the number of Nissl-stained neurons in SNC and CPU in comparison to PD induction without treatment. RJ at low dose significantly (P<0.05) increased TGm and TWm of the cerebral cortex and it significantly (P<0.05) increased TGm but not TWm of cerebellum. RJ at high dose significantly (P<0.05) increased TGm and TWm in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum. Conclusion: Results indicate that RJ can improve PD symptoms; this effect was associated with histomorphometrical disorders.

Protective Effect of Aerobic Training and Royal Jelly on Oxidative Stress in Cardiomyocytes in Obese Rats

Background and purpose: Obesity leads to a variety of metabolic changes that may contribute to abnormalities in the structure and function of the heart. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of royal jelly and aerobic training on oxidative stress in cardiomyocytes in high-fat diet-induced obese rats. Materials and methods: In this experimental study, 45 male rats were randomly di...

Royal Jelly Modulates Hepatotoxic Effect of Rats Treated with Cisplatin

Cisplatin (CP) is one of the most active cytotoxic agents in the treatment of cancer and has adverse side effects such as hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. The aim of this study was focused on investigating the possible protective effect of royal jelly (RJ) against oxidative stress caused by CP injury of the liver and inflammatory changes in male albino rats. Twenty four albino rats were divid...

Royal Jelly Promotes Ovarian Follicles Growth and Increases Steroid Hormones in Immature Rats

Objective Royal jelly (RJ) is a complementary diet widely used by traditional healers for the treatment of infertility. The aim of present study was to evaluate the effect of RJ on some reproductive parameters in immature female rats. MaterialsAndMethods In this experimental study, thirty two immature female rats (30-35gr) were divided into four groups (n=8 /group). Control group received 0.5 m...

P-25: Royal Jelly Protects from The Paclitaxel-Induced Damages on Sperm Quality in Rats

Background: Paclitaxel (Taxol, TXL) is a chemotherapy agent which widely used in the treatment of tumors, such as lung cancer, breast and prostatic cancer. Previous reports indicate that taxol damages mainly dividing cells (spermatogonias and spermatocytes) and postmeiotic epitheliocytes (spermatids and spermatozoa). The toxic effect of the drug on microtubules underlies its antiproliferative e...

Effects of Topical Application of Royal Jelly on Second-Degree Burn Wound Healing in Male Rats

Background and Aims: Burn injury remain as a major medical problem throughout the world. This injury is accompanied with inflammatory and wound healing responses. Since royal jelly (RJ) has anti-inflammatory and wound healing activity therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the repairing effects of RJ on skin burn- damage. Materials and Methods: In an experimental study, 40 male Wista...

Oral Allergy Syndrome in a Child Provoked by Royal Jelly

Royal jelly has been demonstrated to have several physiological activities. However, in the literature, different reactions induced by royal jelly are reported. We describe a case of seven-year-old child that was referred to our observation for two episodes of oral allergy syndrome (OAS) that appeared ten minutes after ingestion of royal jelly. Skin prick test with standard panel of inhalant an...
