Abstract:

The present study examined the comparative effect of different types of code-switching, i.e., intrasentential,inter-sentential, and tag-sentential switching on EFL learners grammar learning andteaching. To this end, a sample of 60 Iranian female and male students in two different institutionsin Qazvin was selected. They were assigned to four groups. Each group was randomly assigned toone of the afore-mentioned treatment conditions. After the experimental period, a post-test was takenfrom students to examine the effect of different types of code-switching on students’ learning ofgrammar. The results showed that the differences among the effects of the above-mentionedtechniques were statistically significant. These findings can have implications for EFL learners, EFLteachers, and materials’ developers.

Why-Question Answering using Intra- and Inter-Sentential Causal Relations

In this paper, we explore the utility of intraand inter-sentential causal relations between terms or clauses as evidence for answering why-questions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that uses both intraand inter-sentential causal relations for why-QA. We also propose a method for assessing the appropriateness of causal relations as answers to a given question using the sema...

Interfacing Sentential and Discourse TAG-based Grammars

Tree-Adjoining Grammars (TAG) have been used both for syntactic parsing, with sentential grammars, and for discourse parsing, with discourse grammars. But the modeling of discourse connectives (coordinate conjunctions, subordinate conjunctions , adverbs, etc.) in TAG-based formalisms for discourse differ from their modeling in sentential grammars. Because of this mismatch, an intermediate, not ...

Processing Of Sentences With Intra-Sentential Code-Switching

Speakers of certain bilingual communities systematically produce utterances in whichthey switch from one language to another, suggesting that the two language systems syst~matically interact with each other in the production (and reoognitlon) of these sentences. We have investigated this phenomenon in a formal or computational framework which consists of two gramnatical systems and a mechanism ...

Inter-sentential Relations in Information Extraction Corpora

In natural language relationships between entities can asserted within a single sentence or over many sentences in a document. Many information extraction systems are constrained to extracting binary relations that are asserted within a single sentence (single-sentence relations) and this limits the proportion of relations they can extract since those expressed across multiple sentences (inter-...

Intra-sentential context effects on the interpretation of logical metonymy

Verbs such as enjoy in the student enjoyed the book exhibit logical metonymy: enjoy is interpreted as enjoy reading. Theoretical work (Pustejovsky, 1991, 1995) predicts that this interpretation can be influenced by intra-sentential context, e.g., by the subject of enjoy. In this article, we test this prediction using a completion experiment and find that the interpretation of a metonymic verb i...

Counterexamples in sentential reasoning.

How do logically naive individuals determine that an inference is invalid? In logic, there are two ways to proceed: (1) make an exhaustive search but fail to find a proof of the conclusion and (2) use the interpretation of the relevant sentences to construct a counterexample--that is, a possibility consistent with the premises but inconsistent with the conclusion. We report three experiments in...
