چکیده مقاله:

Background: Some types of implants used for orbital implantation have side effects and complications. In this study we have evaluated beta-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP: ChronOS) granules as an orbital implant. Methods: Eighteen rabbits randomly allocated to four groups. Right eye enucleation performed in groups I to III followed by filling with autologous bone particles (n=5), a mixture of autologous bone particles and pure ß-TCP granules (n=5), a mixture of autologous bone marrow and pure ß-TCP granules (n=5). Right eye evisceration was done in group IV (n=3), and then filled with one of the aforementioned materials used in groups I, II and III. After 12 weeks, exenterated contents were compared by determining the volumes of the globes, area densitometry using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Results: There was no significant difference between the volumes of enucleated globes before (groups I: 2.6±0.39, II: 2.6±0.12 and III: 2.5±0.3 (ml) and after surgery; (groups I: 2.5±0.4, II: 2.50±0.2 and III: 2.4±0.3). There was also no significant differences among the densities of exenterated contents of all groups; (I: 175±3, II: 165±1 and III: 174±3 mg/cm2). In all enucleated groups, histopathologic evaluations showed remarkable vascularization and fibrous ingrowth which were remarkable in eviscerated group. No significant complication was observed. Conclusion: ß-TCP granules offer good cosmetic results with low risk of infection and extrusion. However, further studies are required before they can be used in human as a new orbital implant.Iran J Med Sci 2006; 31(3): 159-164. Keywords ● ß-tricalcium Phosphate ● Enucleation ● Ocular implants

Acid Neutralization Capacity of a Tricalcium Silicate-Containing Calcium Phosphate Cement as an Endodontic Material

A calcium phosphate cement (CPC) was shown to have the necessary attributes for endodontic materials except adequate basicity needed for antimicrobial properties. To enhance its basicity, tricalcium silicate (Ca3SiO5), a highly alkaline compound, was added to CPC at a mass fraction of 0.25, 0.5 or 0.75. The basicity, acid neutralization and physical properties of the CPC-Ca3SiO5 composites were...

Tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) implantation

Bone loss induced by inflammation is one of the complications after biomaterial implantation. There is no much data on expression of cytokines and defensins into the bone tissue around the implants in literature. The aim of this work was to investigate the distribution and appearance of interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL10 and β – defensin (BD)-2, BD-3, BD-4 after the implantation of different ...

Implantation of Tetrapod-Shaped Granular Artificial Bones or β-Tricalcium Phosphate Granules in a Canine Large Bone-Defect Model

We investigated biodegradability and new bone formation after implantation of tetrapod-shaped granular artificial bone (Tetrabone®) or β-tricalcium phosphate granules (β-TCP) in experimental critical-size defects in dogs, which were created through medial and lateral femoral condyles. The defect was packed with Tetrabone® (Tetrabone group) or β-TCP (β-TCP group) or received no implant (control ...

ß-Tricalcium Phosphate Implants in the Surgical Treatment of Empty Nose Syndrome.

The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy and morbidity of a β-tricalcium phosphate implant in the treatment of empty nose syndrome after turbinectomy. Only patients with a history of inferior turbinectomy and a complaint of permanent paradoxical nasal obstruction were included. β-Tricalcium phosphate ceramic implants were implanted under the mucoperiosteal plane of the lateral nas...
