چکیده مقاله:

Background and Objective: Dolochar is the residual ash from the production of sponge iron in the process of direct reduction of iron ore by the coal-based method. In Iran, this waste is transported to the nearest landfill. However, these methods are a major environmental concern due to the fineness of the waste and the presence of heavy metals in its composition. The aim of the present study is to investigate the methods of reusing dolochar in order to solve the environmental problem and further use it as auxiliary materials in applications such as road construction and wastewater treatment. Materials and Methods: In depth investigation of the word “Dolochar” in Science Direct, SID, and MagIran databases showed that there is no long history of reusing it. Only 14 English articles were found, all of which were used in research; Therefore, the present article deals with the issue of reusing Dolochar in Iran for the first time. Results: By reviewing previous studies, reuse of Dolochar has been classified into five sections. Dolochar use in wastewater treatment (removal of copper, chromium, paint, phosphate, nitrate, surfactant), removal of chromium from mine effluent (more than 94%), as a synthesis gas, as a filter medium (three times better than sand filters) and it is also used in construction and road construction (alternatives to aggregates). Conclusion: The high capacity of Dolochar in waste absorption and wastewater treatment shows that it is necessary to reuse it in Iran instead of burying or leaving it in the environment.

Concentration and recycling of rare earth elements (REEs) from iron mine waste using a combination of physical separation methods

This study aims to investigate and optimize the effects of the main parameters including the particle size, gravity and magnetic separation combination, high gradient magnetic separation, magnetic field intensity, shaking table slope, washing water flow, and electrostatic separation upon the rare earth element (REE) recoveries from iron mine waste. The electron microprobe showed that high amoun...

Nitrification of waste waters from fish-meal factories

Fish-meal factories generate waste waters with high chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), fats and protein concentrations. After their treatment by anaerobic digestion, effluents with high ammoniaand organic-nitrogen contents and a fraction of residual COD are produced. A biological nitrification/denitrification process is proposed to reduce both the residual carbon and the nitro...

Removal Methods of Antibiotic Compounds from Aqueous Environments– A Review

Introduction: Antibiotics as a type of pharmaceutical compounds are widely used in modern medicine and veterinary industries. They enter the environment in different ways, including agricultural runoff, direct discharge of urban wastewater treatment or human waste, direct disposal of medical, veterinary industrial waste and to name but a few. Antibiotics have been able to influence the microbia...

Identification of the fungi absorbing heavy metals isolated from waste deposits of zinc factories

The disposed wastes of zinc industries contain large amounts of heavy metals such as Pb2+ and Cd2+. These elements are considered as hazardous elements to human beings and other organisms. This study aims at introducing the fungal isolates that evolved to be compatible with waste deposits during the time and can absorb Pb2+ and Cd2+ions. During the spring and autumn in 2011, eight samples of se...
