چکیده مقاله:

Chitin and chitosan are the most abundant natural amino polysaccharide that are non-toxic, biodegradable and biocompatible. They have become of great interest not only as an underutilized resource, but also as a new functional material of high potential in various fields. They are biopolymers having immense structural possibilities for chemical and mechanical modifications to generate novel properties, functions and applications especially in various industrial and biomedical fields. In the last decade, chitin and chitosan derivatives have garnered significant interest in the biomedical and biopharmaceutical research fields with applications as biomaterials for tissue engineering and wound healing and as excipients for drug delivery. This review will focus on the structure, properties and applications of chitin and chitosan with particular emphasis on their uses as materials for industrial and biomedical applications.

Structure and properties of chitin whisker reinforced chitosan membranes.

In this paper, rod-like chitin whisker was used as a filler to reinforce the chitosan membrane, and a series of composite membranes were prepared by casting-evaporation method. Mechanical testing shows that tensile strength of the resulting composite membrane with 3 wt% chitin whisker content reaches up to 110.3 MPa, which is about 2.8 times than that of neat chitosan membrane (38.5 MPa), and m...

Chitin and Chitosan Preparation from Marine Sources. Structure, Properties and Applications

This review describes the most common methods for recovery of chitin from marine organisms. In depth, both enzymatic and chemical treatments for the step of deproteinization are compared, as well as different conditions for demineralization. The conditions of chitosan preparation are also discussed, since they significantly impact the synthesis of chitosan with varying degree of acetylation (DA...

Chitin Deacetylases: Properties and Applications

Chitin deacetylases, occurring in marine bacteria, several fungi and a few insects, catalyze the deacetylation of chitin, a structural biopolymer found in countless forms of marine life, fungal cell and spore walls as well as insect cuticle and peritrophic matrices. The deacetylases recognize a sequence of four GlcNAc units in the substrate, one of which undergoes deacetylation: the resulting c...

Physicochemical properties and bioactivity of fungal chitin and chitosan.

Chitinous material was extracted from mycelia of Aspergillus niger and Mucor rouxii grown in yeast peptone dextrose broth for 15 and 21 days, respectively. The extracted material was characterized for purity, degree of acetylation, and crystallinity and tested for antibacterial and eliciting properties. The maximum glucosamine level determined in the mycelium of A. niger was 11.10% dw and in th...

Anticancer and Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Chitin and Chitosan Oligosaccharides

Previous reports indicate that N-acetyl-d-glucosamine oligomers (chitin oligosaccharide; NACOS) and d-glucosamine oligomers (chitosan oligosaccharide; COS) have various biological activities, especially against cancer and inflammation. In this review, we have summarized the findings of previous investigations that have focused on anticancer or anti-inflammatory properties of NACOS and COS. More...
