Background and aim: Gingival recession is a relatively prevalent gingival disorder which increases with age. The purpose of this study was to compare free gingival graft technique (with citric acid) with subepithelial connective tissue graft in the coverage of denuded root surfaces of ClI and ClII Miller. Materials and Methods: Ten systemically healthy patients with at least two bilateral recession defects of clI and clII Miller participated in this study. After oral hygiene instruction and reaching plaque index below 2% and gingival bleading index below 10%, patients entered surgical phase. For each patient, the recession was treated using free gingival graft with citric acid on one side (group A) and with subepithelial connective tissue (group B) on the other side randomly. Recession width (RW), recession depth (RD), the width of Keratinized tissue (KT), probing depth probing attachment level were measured before and three months after surgery. The results were statistically analyzed by Mann-Whitney test. Results: Keratinized tissue increased significantly after both surgical treatments, however, no significant difference was found between the groups. Furthermore, decrease in RD and RW with subepithelial connective tissue graft technique was significantly more than that with free gingival graft. Conclusion: In agreement with the results of other studies, the present study shows subepithelial connective tissue graft as a more efficient technique for root coverage, as compared with free gingival graft. Key Words: Gingival recession - Free gingival graft - Subepithelial connective tissue graft.

Root coverage with the free gingival graft following citric acid and EDTA

Introduction: Treatment of gingival recession and root coverage of denuded roots is one of the main goals of periodontal treatment. The purpose of this study is evaluation of two root conditioning techniques: EDTA (PH=7,24%) and citric acid (PH=1) in free gingival graft procedure. Methods: In this clinical trial study, 16 patients with 24 class I, II gingival recession (Miller classification)...

Coverage of gingival recession using pouch connective tissue graft technique

Cosmetic procedures have become an integral part of periodontal treatment. One of the commonly used esthetic periodontal procedures is coverage of denuded roots. The recession of gingiva is increasingly becoming a more prominent condition in the oral health of many patients and should be treated at its earliest detection. The multi-factorial etiology, decision modality, and current trends follo...

A 3-year longitudinal evaluation of subpedicle free connective tissue graft for gingival recession coverage.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to longitudinally evaluate, over a 3-year period, the reduction of gingival recession through use of a subepithelial free connective tissue graft placed under a coronally advanced partial-thickness pedicle flap. METHODS Twenty-one buccal recession defects (mean 3.67 mm; range 3 to 4.5 mm; Miller Class I, II, and III) in 15 patients were treated using t...

Coronally positioned flap with subepithelial connective tissue graft for root coverage: various indications and flap designs.

Aesthetic concerns and functional abnormalities, such as dentin hypersensitivity, are often associated with gingival recession defects. Root coverage procedures aim to restore both gingival aesthetics and function in recession defects. The coronally positioned flap combined with the subepithelial connective tissue graft is one of the most widely used root coverage procedures. The present report...
