گزارشهای سازمان استاندارد ملی در آمریکا از سال ۱۹۵۳ بیانگر کاهش درصد مرگ و میر ناشی از سل و ابتلا به آن بوده است. حتی در اواخر ۱۹۷۰ با افزایش مهاجرت از کامبوج، لائوس و ویتنام به سایر نقاط جهان کاهش درصد ابتلا به سل نشان داده شده است. در طی سالهای ۸۷- ۱۹۸۵ افزایش موارد ابتلا به سل در سیاه پوستان /۶ ٪۳ در اسپانیائیها ۱۲/۷ ٪و در سفید پوستان غیر اسپانیایی ٪۴ / ۸ تخمین زده شده است. از سال ۱۹۹۰ اپیدمی ایدز بطور معنی داری سبب افزایش تعداد مرگ و میر ناشی از سل در بالغین جوان گردیده است. فاکتورهای مؤثر در افزایش اپیدمی ایدز شامل بی خانمانی، فقر، مهاجرت و کاهش سطح سلامت و بهداشت در جامعه بوده است.
