چکیده مقاله:

This study was conducted to investigate the correlation between lipid-lowering and bone-protective effects of eicosapentaenoic acid on steroid-induced bonechanges in rats. Twenty-one male 10-week-old Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups (n = 7 each) and treated with 0.9% NaCl SC (group 1) or methylprednisolone 7 mg/kg SC once a week (group 2) or methylprednisolone 7 mg/kg SC once a week + eicosapentaenoic acid 160 mg/kg, PO daily (group 3), for 6 weeks. At the end of the experiment, serum total cholesterol and triglycerides concentrations were determined using enzymatic colorimetric assays and bone histomorphometric analyses were performed on cancellousbone of femoral epiphysis and metaphysis using a photomicroscope and a digital camera. Histomorphometric parameters demonstrated a significant bone loss due to methylprednisolone administration, which was partly restored by eicosapentaenoic acid. A strong inverse correlation was observed between the serum total cholesterol concentration and epiphyseal trabecular width and metaphyseal trabecular osteoid width (R = -0.82, P = 0.04 and R = -0.86, P = 0.01, respectively). Serum triglycerides concentration was also strongly and inversely correlated with the above mentioned parameters (R = -0.88, P = 0.02 for epiphyseal trabecular width and R = -0.81, P = 0.02 for metaphyseal trabecular osteoid width). The correlation between the lipid-lowering and bone-protective effects of eicosapentaenoic acid may be helpful in the clarification of its effects on bone and lipid metabolism.

Protective effect of folic acid on cyclosporine-induced bone loss in rats.

Hyperhomocysteinemia is seen in patients with decreased bone mineral density. Cyclosporine can cause alveolar bone loss and osteopenia. It is also associated with elevated serum homocysteine levels. We aimed to investigate the effect of cyclosporine on serum homocysteine level, bone volume, and bone density, and determine whether folic acid had a protective effect against bone loss. In an exper...

Effect of concomitant administration of eicosapentaenoic acid and alendronate on bone changes due to methylprednisolone in rats

One of the main limitations of glucocorticoid therapy is its negative effects on bones. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of concurrent administration of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and alendronate on bone changes induced by glucocorticoid treatment in rats. Thirty six male Wistar rats, who were 2.5 months of age, were divided equally into six groups and treated with normal sal...

Protective Effects of Vildagliptin against Pioglitazone-Induced Bone Loss in Type 2 Diabetic Rats

Long-term use of thiazolidinediones (TZDs) is associated with bone loss and an increased risk of fracture in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Incretin-based drugs (glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists and dipeptidylpeptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors) have several benefits in many systems in addition to glycemic control. In a previous study, we reported that exendin-4 might increase bone mi...

The effects of local and systemic Atorvastatin on inflammation and alveolar bone loss in experimental periodontitis in rats

Objectives The frst cause of tooth loss in developed countries is periodontitis and mostly occurs in people over 40 years old.Atorvastatin is a statin drug class, which has a revolutionary impact on the treatment of high cholesterol and also stimulates bone morphogenic protein which has osteogenic potential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of local and systemic Atorvastatin in...

Effects of dietary treatment of rats with eicosapentaenoic acid or docosahexaenoic acid on hepatic lipid metabolism.

(1) Effects of dietary treatment of male albino rats with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or docosahexaenoic acid on hepatic mitochondrial lipid metabolism have been investigated. (2) Mitochondria isolated from rats given these treatments were shown to have increased ability to respire on acyl-CoA esters in the presence of malonate. This effect was expressed with most of the long-chain acyl-CoA est...
