چکیده مقاله:

Background: Unsafe transfusion practices put patients at high risk of transfusion transmissible infections. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of transfusion transmissible infections (including Human Immunodeficiency Virus [HIV] 1 and 2, Hepatitis B Virus [HBV], Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and syphilis) during a period of 18 months among blood donors in the Blood Bank of Lady Hardinge Medical College.  Methods: The prevalence of markers of HIV, HBV, HCV and syphilis was evaluated among blood donors from January 2013 to June 2014. All donors who came to donate blood in the blood bank as well as voluntary donors who donated in the outreach blood donation camps were included in the study. Results: 15713 donations were received. The overall seroprevalance of HIV, HBV, HCV and syphilis was 0.2%, 1.54%, 0.49%, and 1.45%, respectively. The seroprevalence of HBV, HCV and syphilis was 0.57%, 0.14%, and 0.53%, respectively amongst voluntary donors. Conclusion: transfusion transmissible infections were less common among voluntary donors than those among replacement donors. Awareness of the general population about voluntary blood donation should be created to minimize the chances of spreading transfusion transmitted infections.

Seroprevalence of transfusion transmissible viral infections among blood donors in a tertiary care hospital

Conclusion Stringent screening of donors for TTI is crucial to ensure safe supply of blood and blood products. This study involved both voluntary and replacement donors. Prevalence of TTI was found to be low in females. Highly sensitive ELISA kits play a major role in detecting antibody to HIV, HCV and HBsAg. Furthermore, Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) facilitates viral detection at a much earlier ...

Seroprevalence & changing trends of transfusion-transmitted infections amongst blood donors in a Regional Blood Transfusion Centre in north India

Background & objectives Transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) are the major problem associated with blood transfusion. Accurate estimates of risk of TTIs are essential for monitoring the safety of blood supply. The present study was undertaken to determine the percentage of voluntary donors (VDs) and replacement donors (RDs) and also, to estimate and compare the seroprevalence and changing ...

Prevalence of Major Transfusion-Transmissible Viral Infections in Blood Donors Attending Fars Blood Transfusion Center, Shiraz, Southern Iran: 2002–05

Evaluation of trends in the rate of infectious diseases of blood donors is essential for monitoring safety of blood supply and effective screening of donors. Transfusion records of blood donors who attended the Center between 2002 and 2005 were reviewed for positive cases of HBS (by ELISA), HIV (by Western Blot) and HCV (by ELISA). During 2002–05, 507,531 persons donated blood. The prevalence r...

Transfusion-transmissible infections among blood donors in Kathmandu, Nepal.

BACKGROUND Screening of transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs) among blood donors can be a cost-effective approach to monitor the prevalence, distribution, and trends of the infections among healthy-looking individuals. The study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of four TTIs, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and syphilis, among blood...
