چکیده مقاله:

A variety of analytical techniques have been developed and employed to characterize the surfaces, subsurfaces and interfaces of surface engineering systems. They provide important information for quality control, process optimization and further development. Since the mid 1980's, glow discharge spectrometry (GDS) has emerged as an important and versatile technique for rapid depth profiling analysis of the chemical compositions of surface layers with thickness ranging from a few nanometers to several tens of micrometers. The basic principles of GDS are first discussed briefly in the present paper. Then applications of the technique to various surface engineering systems, including PVD coatings, ion implanted surfaces, diffusion layers and multi-layer coatings, are demonstrated to highlight the important role of this analytical technique in surface engineering.

Mechanical Surface Treatments of Ti-6Al-4V Miniplate Implant Manufactured by Electrical Discharge Machining (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Present work aims at multi-mechanical surface treatment of Ti-6Al-4V based-miniplate implant manufactured by electrical discharge machining (EDM) for biomedical use. Mechanical surface treatment consists of consequent use of ultrasonic cleaning, rotary tumbler polishing, and brushing. Surface layers are analyzed employing scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Al...

Investigation of a Powerful Tool for the Development of Thinly Bedded Carbonate Reservoirs (TECHNICAL NOTE)

In thin-layered reservoirs, drilling engineers face tough challenges—planning their drilling programs to follow the most productive reservoir layers while avoiding nearby water, gas or high-pressure zones. The rewards for a successful drilling strategy are clear—increased oil production and reduced water cut. In an oil field in the Persian Gulf, for example, oil production was increased four- t...

Radio Frequency Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy Depth Profiling Analysis of Thin Anodic Alumina Films as Potential Reference Materials

s in any form of chemical analysis, the quality of information obtained from a depth profiling experiment is only as good as the reference materials that are used to calibrate the instrument. In the case of depth profiling, calibration must take place in terms of chemical composition as well as distribution with respect to the specimen surface. The nature of applications requiring such analyses...

Technical note: revised fully stature estimation technique.

In a previous paper (Raxter et al., 2006), we devised new formulae and clarified measurement procedures for estimating living stature from skeletal height using Fully’s (1956) anatomical technique on Terry Collection samples. Like previous researchers (Lundy, 1983; Lundy and Feldesman, 1987; Sciulli et al., 1990; Sciulli and Giesen, 1993; Bidmos, 2005; Petersen, 2005), we found that it was nece...

Technique of microvascular decompression. Technical note.

Vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve in the cerebellopontine angle is now generally accepted as the primary source or "trigger" causing trigeminal neuralgia. A clear clinicopathological association exists in the neurovascular relationship. In general, pain in the third division of the trigeminal nerve is caused by rostral compression, pain in the second division is caused by medial or m...

The use of matrix-specific calibrations for oxygen in analytical glow discharge spectrometry

The performance of glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy and mass spectrometry for oxygen determination is investigated using a set of new conductive samples containing oxygen in the percent range in three different matrices (Al, Mg, and Cu) prepared by a sintering process. The sputtering rate corrected calibrations obtained at standard conditions for the 4 mm anode (700 V, 20 mA) in GD-...
