چکیده مقاله:

Aims: Oxidative stress plays an important role in pathogenesis of seizure. In this study the effect of ethyl acetate fraction of Tanacetum parthenium against brain oxidative damage in pentylenetetrazole-induced (PTZ) seizure model in mice was investigated. Materials and methods: In this experimental study, mice were distributed into 6 groups: 1) Control, 2) PTZ, 3-6) Fraction+PTZ. The animals of 4 recent groups, besides PTZ received 25, 50,100 and 200 mg/kg of fraction. PTZ (100 mg/kg) and fraction (30 min before PTZ) were administered interapretoneally for 3 weeks. Delay in onset of Minimal Clonic Seizur (MCS), Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizure (GTCS) and the level of oxidative stress indexes in cortical and hippocampal tissues were measured.  Results: Pretreatment with fraction resulted in postponing the onset seizures in Fraction+PTZ groups compared to PTZ group (P<0.05, P<0.01 and P<0.001). In addition, all doses of fraction reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and increased the level of total thiol and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity in brain tissues of Fraction+PTZ groups with respect to PTZ group (P<0.05, P<0.01 and P<0.001).   Conclusion: Ethyl acetate fraction of Tanacetum parthenium attenuated PTZ- stimulated seizures through improving brain tissue oxidative stress.

Protective effect of ginger against the pentylenetetrazole-induced seizure threshold model in streptozocin treated-diabetic mice

Introduction: There is evidence that diabetes affects seizure susceptibility. Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) which is used in traditional medicine has antioxidant activity and neuroprotective effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the seizure threshold induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) in diabetic mice after induction of diabetes with streptozocin and to examine the possible ...

Effect of Ocimum basilicum hydro-alcoholic extract on oxidative damage of brain tissue following seizures induced by pentylenetetrazole in mice

Introduction: A relationship between epileptic seizures and brain tissue oxidative damage has been suggested. Ocimum basilicum (O. basilicum) has been shown to have beneficial effects including hypnotic and protective against tissue oxidative damage. The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of O. basilicum hydro-alcoholic extract on oxidative damage of brain tissue following s...

Anti-hepatofibrotic effect of ethyl acetate fraction of Bombax costatum Pellgr.EtVuillet stem bark against CCl4-induced liver fibrosis in mice

Background & Aim: Bombax costatum stem bark is traditionally used in treatment of liver diseases but the anti-hepatofibrotic effect of its ethyl acetate fraction has not been scientifically evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-hepatofibrotic effect of ethyl acetate fraction of B. costatum stem bark (EAB) against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver fibrosis in mice. Anticonvulsant Effect of Guaifenesin against Pentylenetetrazol-Induced Seizure in Mice

Background: There have been some reports about the possible N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist activity of Guaifenesin. As drugs with a similar structure to Guaifenesin (i.e. Felbamate) and those with NMDA antagonist activity have been clinically used as anticonvulsants, the aim of this study was to determine whether Guaifenesin has an anticonvulsant effect in an animal model of seizure. ...

Antioxidant effect of Achillea wilhelmsii extract on pentylenetetrazole (seizure model)-induced oxidative brain damage in Wistar rats.

An important role for oxidative stress both as a consequence and as a cause of epileptic seizures has been suggested. Since Achillea wilhelmsii (A. wilhelmsii) has been considered to have the antioxidant effects as well as central nervous system depressant properties, the anti-seizure effects of the plant extract in addition to its effects on brain tissues oxidative damage were investigated in ...
