Orientalists’ humanly untaught prophet

چکیده مقاله:

This paper has studied orientalists’ arguments for Prophet’s awareness of reading and writing. Their claim has been founded on two historical narrations. As narrated, the Prophet has written the words Mohammad ibn a’bdollah down at the time of Hodaibiyah and at the end of his life he ordered the people around him to bring pen and paper to write some advices for them.  Considering the Prophet’s being divinely learned, his ability to write and performing the ability, both before and after his prophecy, would make the problem clear. Key words: orientalism, humanly untaught, humanistic teaching, divine teaching, writing, reading.

Humanly Speaking

one will no doubt be as successful as its predecessors. It lacks something in connected thought, for its "chapters" are in reality different lectures given to a wide variety of audiences and necessarily pitched at different levels under titles by no means mutually exclusive. The book is thus best read as a series of essays and these include, as in the author's other writings, sex and society, t...

Usability of Humanly Computable Passwords

Reusing passwords across multiple websites is a common practice that compromises security. Recently, Blum and Vempala have proposed password strategies to help people calculate, in their heads, passwords for different sites without dependence on third-party tools or external devices. Thus far, the security and efficiency of these “mental algorithms” has been analyzed only theoretically. But are...

Polymatroid Prophet Inequalities

Consider a gambler and a prophet who observe a sequence of independent, non-negative numbers. The gambler sees the numbers one-by-one whereas the prophet sees the entire sequence at once. The goal of both is to decide on fractions of each number they want to keep so as to maximize the weighted fractional sum of the numbers chosen. The classic result of Krengel and Sucheston (1977-78) asserts th...

A Critical Study of the Orientalists` Views on the Part of Holy War in Spreading Islam during Prophet`s Lifetime

Rapid spread of Islam in Prophet`s lifetime has attracted the attention of scholars, in particular, that of orientalists. They know the spread of Islam due to numerous agents; yet they know holy war as the main. This paper has presented a classification of orientalists in brief at first and, then, assessed and criticized the view claiming holy war as the main agent. Finally, it deals with the t...

Combinatorial Prophet Inequalities

We introduce a novel framework of Prophet Inequalities for combinatorial valuation functions. For a (non-monotone) submodular objective function over an arbitrary matroid feasibility constraint, we give an O(1)-competitive algorithm. For a monotone subadditive objective function over an arbitrary downward-closed feasibility constraint, we give an O(log n log r)-competitive algorithm (where r is...
