P-18: Effect of Royal Jelly on Oxidative Stress Marker in Testes Tissue in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rat

Background: Chronic diabetes mellitus is accompanied with enhanced oxidative stress and reduce the activity of antioxidant defense system. Due to significant role of enhanced oxidative stress in development of testes damage in diabetices, this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of royal jelly on oxidative stress marker in testis tissue of diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 21 male Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups: normal control, diabetic control and diabetic controls treated with royal jelly (100 mg / kg). In this study, diabetic was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (60 mg / kg). Royal jelly with a dose of 100 mg / kg body weight was given by gavage. The duration of treatment was 6 weeks. Tissue level of malondialdehyde in testes tissue were measured. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey tests. Results: A significant increase in tissue level of malondialdehyde in diabetic rats were observed (p<0.05). diabetic controls treated with royal jelly significantly reduced the tissue level of Malondialdehyde. Conclusion: Six weeks treatment of royal jelly (100 mg/ kg bw) reduce oxidative stress indexes in testes tissue of diabetic rats.
