چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: There is no research consensus on the relationship between lipid profiles, atherosclerosis risk factors, and lumbar disc degeneration. The present study examined the relationship between lipid profile and some risk factors of cardiovascular diseases and lumbar disc degeneration in patients undergoing surgery. Methods and Materials/Patients: The study was conducted on 130 adult inpatient candidates (aged 20-77 years) for lumbar degenerative disc diseases surgery at the Poursina educational Hospital in Rasht City, Iran. Datasheets were used to collect information from the patients’ medical records or through interviewing with them after obtaining their written informed consent. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS. The Chi-squared test and Fisher's exact test were applied to examine the relationship between variables at a significance level of P≤0.05. Results: A total 60.8% of the subjects suffered from comorbid conditions; mostly hyperlipidemia (32.7%) and hypertension (30.8%). Moreover, 87.7% of the samples had dyslipidemia; the levels of total cholesterol, LDL, and triglyceride were more than normal in 46.2%, 68.5% and 46.2% of the subjects, respectively, and the level of HDL was less than normal in 44.6% of the patients. The mean LDL and triglyceride levels were higher than normal, and the mean total cholesterol was reported to be borderline. Furthermore, 74.6% and 84.6% of the patients had BMI and abdominal circumference higher than the normal range. Physical activity in 88.5% of the subjects was below the desired level, and 79.2% of the patients reported no history of smoking. Inferential findings indicated a significant relationship between dyslipidemia and the various types of lumbar degenerative disc diseases (P<0.05). Conclusion: The study revealed a relationship between dyslipidemia, obesity and inactivity, and lumbar degenerative disc diseases.  Further research is required to investigate other atherosclerosis risk factors and the types of lipids.
