چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: The paranasal sinuses are known for their complex anatomy and significant difference in size and shape. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses in computed tomography (CT). Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, patients over 18 years of age, who had undergone CT imaging in a private clinic, were screened for eligibility of participation. After excluding the patients with evident sinus pathology in CT, 501 cases were included. An experienced maxillofacial radiologist evaluated the CT images and extracted the frequency of variations using a standardized data collection sheet. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, independent samples t-test, and chi-square test were used for the statistical analysis. Results: Among the studied variations, septal deviation and Agger nasi, each with 336 cases (67.1%), and concha bullosa, with 240 cases (47.9%), were identified as the most common anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses. The uncinate bulla showed a significant correlation with gender (P=0.036). Conclusion: Considering the remarkable prevalence of some important variations, which may increase the risk of complications in sinus surgery, CT evaluation of patients is recommended before surgical interventions in the sinuses.

An investigation of the anatomical variations of left atrial appendage by multidetector computed tomographic coronary angiography.

PURPOSE The left atrial appendage (LAA) is usually known as a long, tubular, hooked structure derived from the left atrium. However, it varies widely in terms of anatomical shape. In this study, anatomical shape variations of the LAA were investigated and classified in vivo in a large group of patients by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) coronary angiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS The...

Multidetector Computed Tomographic Characterization of a Left Atrial Myxoma

A 57-year-old woman presented to her local hospital with left arm and leg weakness and was diagnosed with a right-sided stroke. A subsequent transthoracic echocardiogram showed a large, poorly-defined mass within the left atrium, which prompted her transfer to our institute for urgent surgical resection. As a prelude to surgery, we performed a " tripartite " coronary CT angiogram to assess the ...

Relevance of sinonasal anatomical variations in the preoperative evaluation by computed tomography for endonasal surgery

Endonasal surgery is utilized in diagnosis, biopsy, management and follow-up of several sinonasal diseases. In order to perform this procedure with the appropriate safety, preventing iatrogenic lesions, it is essential that the surgeon can preoperatively rely on an appropriate mapping of bone structures involving the nasal fossae, paranasal cavities and their drainage pathways. The imaging meth...

Multidetector computed tomographic angiography imaging of pentalogy of Cantrell.

A 4-day-old female mildly cyanotic neonate presented clinically with ventral herniation of the heart to the anterior abdominal wall and umbilical defect containing bowel loop (Figure [A] and Movie I in the online-only Data Supplement), raising suspicion of pentalogy of Cantrell. Echocardiogram of the ectopic heart, although technically difficult, revealed overlap of the ascending aorta with sma...

Multidetector Computed Tomographic Angiography (MDCTA) for Penetrating Neck Injuries

Evaluation of patients after penetrating neck injury has evolved over time. Previously, location of injury and symptoms were used to determine management. The contemporary management of penetrating neck injuries relies on physical examination. Patients with hard signs of vascular or aerodigestive tract injury require immediate operation, regardless of location of injury. Those with no signs can...
