چکیده مقاله:

Background and aims: The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the treatment methods to treat many diseases and injuries such as decompression sickness, wound healing, carbon monoxide poisoning, thermal burns, and nervous system injuries. This article aims to review the possible mechanisms of the effectiveness of this treatment in neurological injuries according to the available studies. Methods: This review article has been performed by searching in international databases between 2000 and 2018 with keywords such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, nerve injury, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, neuropathic pain, emphasizing mechanisms of neuroprotection induced by the hyperbaric oxygen. Results: The beneficial effects of hyperbaric oxygen can be related to several biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic effects. However, the mechanisms responsible for it have not been fully identified yet, and require further investigation. Conclusion: Since neurological defects caused by injury to the nervous system are probably due to inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, it seems that hyperbaric oxygen can be considered as an effective treatment for nerve injuries.

The Protective Effects of Nanoparticles in the Treatment of Nervous System Injuries: A Narrative Review

Background and Objectives: Nervous system damage causes many economic costs annually. Although many efforts have been made to treat these injuries, nerves are not yet completely regenerated. Primary damage to the nervous system is followed by a series of events such as inflammation, increased oxidative stress, and the spread of damage. Oxidative stress caused by an imbalance between the product...

Central nervous system oxygen toxicity during routine hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is associated with a recognized risk for clinically apparent central nervous system (CNS) toxicity. The risk for oxygen-induced convulsions during routine hyperbaric treatment of most routine conditions is extremely low. However, reports from the 1980's describing the incidence of CNS oxygen toxicity differ significantly from more recent reports since 1996. This retros...

Central Nervous System Oxygen Toxicity and Hyperbaric Oxygen Seizures.

INTRODUCTION The use of hyperbaric oxygen (O2) as a therapeutic agent carries with it the risk of central nervous system (CNS) O2 toxicity. METHODS To further the understanding of this risk and the nature of its molecular mechanism, a review was conducted on the literature from various fields. RESULTS Numerous physiological changes are produced by increased partial pressures of oxygen (Po2)...

Hyperbaric oxygen chambers and the treatment of sports injuries.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, an established therapeutic intervention in diving medicine, is being investigated in wound management, where oxygen is an integral part of the healing process. Currently, the evidence is controversial as to whether there is a basis for using hyperbaric oxygen in normal wounds. This review explains the rationale for the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and reports on t...

Vagus nerve stimulation in the treatment of nervous system disease: a review article

The vagus nerve (VN), the longest cranial nerve and an essential part of the parasympathetic system, connects the central nervous system to respiratory, cardiovascular, immune, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems and is involved in the maintenance of homeostasis by controlling these systems. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is related to any method that would stimulate the vagal nerve via elec...

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment for post-radiation central nervous system injury: a retrospective case series.

Increased use of radiation therapy and increasing life spans following radiation treatment has led to an increase in the finding of post-radiation central nervous system injury in patients who have previously undergone radiation treatments. At this time, information regarding treatment for patients suffering from this serious side effect is limited and not readily available. It is imperative to...
