چکیده مقاله:

Polyoma virus nephropathy occurs in 3% to 4% of renal transplant recipients, causing graft loss in 50% of cases. The objective of the present study was to explore the effects of age, sex, post-transplantation period and plasma creatinine levels on the polyoma virus infection in kidney transplanted patients. Urine samples were collected from 362 patients, centrifuged and microscopic slides prepared using Papaniclaou staining method. The slides then examined and decoy cells were identified in 96 (27%) patients. The prevalence of the infection increased with increased post-transplantation period and the age of the patients. Moreover, patients with positive decoy cells had more abnormal plasma creatinine levels than those with negative for such cells. In conclusion identification of decoy cells might be of value for the diagnosis of nephropathy, especially if the presence of such cells is accompanied with the elevated plasma levels of creatinine.Iran J Med Sci 2006; 31(2): 109-111. Keywords ● Polyoma virus ● renal transplant ● urine cytology

Clinical course of polyoma virus nephropathy in 67 renal transplant patients.

Polyoma virus (PV) can cause interstitial nephritis and lead to graft failure in renal transplant recipients. The clinical course of patients with polyoma virus nephritis (PVN) is not well understood, partially due to its relatively low incidence. This study is a retrospective analysis of our experience over 4 yr. The specific purpose is to outline the clinical course and outcome of patients wi...

Screening to prevent polyoma virus nephropathy: a medical decision analysis.

Polyomavirus nephropathy (PVN) is an emerging medical dilemma in kidney transplantation. Methods to screen before clinical disease are available and early immunosuppression reduction may change the natural history of progression. However, the consequences of an increase in rejection may limit the benefits. In a simulation model a 'screen' versus 'no-screen' strategy was compared. Baseline PVN c...

Identification of polyoma BK virus in kidney transplant recipients by shell vial cell culture assay and urine cytology.

Urine cytology often is used to identify BK virus in kidney transplant recipients in the cytology laboratory. To assess the usefulness of the shell vial cell culture assay to identify BK virus, urine samples from 42 kidney transplant recipients were tested by the urine cytology and shell vial cell culture assays. The shell vial cell culture assay is just as sensitive and specific as urine cytol...

Risk factors for polyoma virus nephropathy

BACKGROUND Polyoma virus-associated nephropathy (PVN) is a common cause of renal transplant failure. The risk factors for the development of PVN have not yet been studied in large cohorts of patients for periods of 20 years. METHODS We collected clinical, renal biopsy and urinary cytology data from all patients with renal transplantations performed at the University Hospital of Basel from 198...
