چکیده مقاله:

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the ratio of Electromyography (EM G) activities of the vastus medialis obliqus (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) within seven angles of knee joint range of motion using isometric contraction in open kinetic chain (OK C) and closed kinetic chain (CKC). Methods: The dominant knees of 44 healthy female subjects (mean age: 24.84 with range: 20-30 years old) were analyzed. Surface electrode pairs were attached over the VMO and VL by using Basmajian methods. The EMG biofeedback data was collected while the subject performed isometric contraction on isometric and squat exercise within 7 degrees (0° to 90°) with 15° intervals of knee flexion angle. Results: Paired T-test andANOVA were performed between variables. Results demonstrated that in this study there are significant differences: I) between OKC and CKC exercise in 0°, 15°, and 30° ofknee flexion, II) between all angles in CKC except: 0-15°,0-30°, 0-45°, 15-30°, 60-75°, and 75-90°, and III) between 15-60°, 30-60°, 45-60°, and 60-90° in OKC (p<O.OOl). As a result in OKC and CKC respectively, 60° and 15° angles ofknee flexion were most sufficient positions (i.e. increased VMONL activities ratios), -15° and 90° ofknee flexion were the most insufficient positions and arc of movement between 45- 750 and 0-30° was considered as the most sufficient arc of movement. Conclusion: As the result of this research and biomechanical and neuro-physiological viewpoints, emphasized in the literature, our recommendations are: in early phase or in early sessions of treatment of patellofemoral joint dysfunction, treatment exercise done in CKC & sufficient position and after progression of the patient's condition, OKC exercises could also be considered.

Influence of Neuromuscular Fatigue on Co-contraction between Vastus Medialis and Vastus Lateralis during Isometric Contractions

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of neuromuscular fatigue on vastus medialis and vastus lateralis co-contraction. Fifteen healthy young subjects performed an isometric leg extension test in two different condition phases: i) maximum test for determining the maximum voluntary isometric contraction, and ii) fatigue test for exercises executed at 50% of the maximum voluntary contra...

A Systematic Review of the Effect of Open and Closed Kinetic Chain Exercises on the Vastus Medialis Oblique and Vastus Lateralis Muscles of Patients with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

The Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a Retro patellar or per patellar pain caused by Patellofemoral joint modifications of a physical and biomechanical nature. Individuals with painful knees often receive a diagnosis of PFPS [1] which is worsened by performance of activities like stair climbing/descending, squatting or prolonged sitting with knees in a flexed position [1]. This condition ...

Activities of the Vastus Lateralis and Vastus Medialis Oblique Muscles during Squats on Different Surfaces

[Purpose] The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of squat exercises performed on different surfaces on the activity of the quadriceps femoris muscle in order to provide information on support surfaces for effective squat exercises. [Subjects and Method] Fourteen healthy subjects performed squat exercises for five seconds each on three different support surfaces: hard plates...

Effects of Open and Closed Kinetic Chains of Sling Exercise Therapy on the Muscle Activity of the Vastus Medialis Oblique and Vastus Lateralis

[Purpose] The muscle strength of the quadriceps muscle is critical in patellofemoral pain syndrome. The quadriceps muscle supplies the power for dynamic patellar movement, and the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) enable the patella to stabilize during tracking. We followed the theories about open and closed kinetic chain exercises to design two exercises, sling open chain...

Background & Aims: This study was performed to compare the effects of open and closed chain terminal knee extension exercises on onset latency of vastus medialis obliques (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL), pain and function in subjects diagnosed with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Methods: In a pretest and posttest 5-week intervention study, 26 subjects diagnosed with PFPS and 13 healthy su...
