2-Hydroxyphenylthiazolines are a family of iron-chelating nonribosomal peptide natural products that function as virulence-conferring siderophores in various Gram-negative bacteria. They have also been reported as metabolites of Gram-positive Streptomyces species. Transcriptional analyses of Streptomyces venezuelae ATCC 10712 revealed that its genome contains a putative 2-hydroxyphenylthiazolin...
Two novel antibiotics, furaquinocins A and B were isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. KO-3988. These antibiotics possess cytocidal activities against HeLa S3 cells in vitro at concentrations of 3.1 micrograms/ml for A and 1.6 micrograms/ml for B. Neither substance possessed antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi or yeast at a concentrati...
A new antibiotic kazusamycin, was isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. No. 81-484, which shows antitumor activity against experimental murine tumors. This antibiotic did not possess antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, but showed strong cytotoxic activity against HeLa cells in vitro. The chemical and physico-chemical properties of kazusamycin s...
A new antibiotic sohbumycin, was isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. No. 82-85. It appeared to belong to the peptide lactone type of antibiotics from physico-chemical studies and has an empirical formula of C31H47N8O10Cl. In in vitro studies, the antibiotic was found to possess potent cytocidal activity against HeLa S3 cells and antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive bac...
Bacillus subtilis induces expression of the gene ytnP in the presence of the antimicrobial streptomycin, produced by the Gram-positive bacterium Streptomyces griseus. ytnP encodes a lactonase-homologous protein that is able to inhibit the signaling pathway required for the streptomycin production and development of aerial mycelium in S. griseus.
During the course of our screening program for new antibiotics, Streptomyces sp. 80432 isolated from a soil sample was found to produce a water-soluble antibiotic. This antibiotic, named minimycin, showed not only inhibitory activity against Grampositive and Gram-negative bacteria, but also antitumor activity. Isolation and purification by a chromatography gave a colorless crystalline substance...
A new antitumor antibiotic SF2575 has been isolated from a culture filtrate of Streptomyces sp. SF2575. The molecular formula was determined to be C40H43NO15 by elemental analysis, mass and 13C NMR spectral analyses. The spectral data revealed SF2575 to be a new tetracycline antibiotic. It was active against Gram-positive bacteria and exhibited antitumor activity against P388 leukemia in mice.
Background: Streptomyces is one of the most important prokaryotic microorganisms, and their secondary metabolites have high antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties. Three-quarters of the antibiotics known to be produced by these bacteria. As a result, finding new effective compounds from these microorganisms can be a way to treat cancer. The aim of this study was to isolate and screen halophilic...
Streptomycetes are high G+C Gram-positive, antibiotic-producing, mycelial soil bacteria. The 8.7-Mb Streptomyces coelicolor genome was previously sequenced by using an ordered library of Supercos-1 clones. Here, we describe an efficient procedure for creating precise gene replacements in the cosmid clones by using PCR targeting and lambda-Red-mediated recombination. The cloned Streptomyces gene...
Novel polyether antibiotics X-14873A, X-14873G, and X-14873H are produced by the fermentation of Streptomyces sp. X-14873 (ATCC 31679). This report presents taxonomic studies and fermentation conditions for the antibiotic producing culture. The antibiotics are mainly active against Gram-positive bacteria. The ionophore properties of X-14873A are also characterized.
