Several studies have suggested a role of candida in infected cases of severe acute pancreatitis. This commentary reports high incidence and mortality rates of candida infection in this setting and demonstrates the value of the colonization index to detect patients at risk for fungal infection. These findings indicate the need to review the place of antifungal therapy and prophylaxis.
The objective of the study was to determine the effects of Candida albicans respiratory tract colonization on Acinetobacter baumannii pneumonia in a rat model. Rats were colonized with C. albicans by instillation of 3 × 10(6) CFU into their airways, while sterile saline was instilled in the control group. The colonized rats were further divided into two groups: treated with amphotericin B or no...
BACKGROUND Yeast colonization is a predictor for invasive infection in neonates. Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis are leading causes of invasive fungal infection (IFI) in this population. This study examines maternal breast milk as a predictor of colonization of infants with yeast. METHODS Inclusion criteria were admission longer than 72 hours to the neonatal intensive care unit and ...
Among 234 isolates comprising 26 different Candida species colonizing the oropharynx of 181 (54.3% of 399 surveyed) HIV-infected outpatients, 27 (11.7%) were fluconazole resistant. Antibacterial treatment was associated with increased rates of yeast colonization, while antiretroviral therapy and pneumococcal vaccination protected patients from yeast colonization.
Background and purpose: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic or relapsing inflammatory skin disease which affects 10–20% of children and 1-3% of adults. Recently microbial agents particularly fungi have received more attention as the aggravating factors of AD. Fungi could be found throughout the world. Some fungal genera are as the normal flora, and some of them are abundantly found in the envi...
Background: Fungal infections with high morbidity and mortality in neonatal intensive care unit are usually preceded by colonization. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of fungal colonization, determine the risk factors and health outcome such as any change in the patient's improvement in hospitalized infants of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). <e...
PURPOSE The prevalence of Candida infections has been rising with an increasingly aging population and a larger population of immunocompromised individuals. The use of probiotics may be an alternative approach to antifungal agents in the prevention and treatment of oral candidiasis. This study aimed to evaluate the short-term effect of probiotics in reducing the infection level of oral Candida ...
Peri-implant inflammation contributes for loss of secondary stability of orthodontic mini-implants. The investigation of microbial colonization in this area would benefit its control, and consequently favor the long-term success of mini-implants. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the establishment and the evolution of microbial colonization process in orthodontic mini-implants f...
BACKGROUND Colonization by Candida species is the most important predictor of the development of invasive fungal disease in preterm neonates, and the enteric reservoir is a major site of colonization. We evaluated the effectiveness of an orally supplemented probiotic (Lactobacillus casei subspecies rhamnosus; Dicoflor [Dicofarm spa]; 6 x 10(9) cfu/day) in the prevention of gastrointestinal colo...
Background and Aims: Different Candida species, especially Candida albicans have been known as part of human oral cavity normal flora. Changes in the oral environment resulting from tooth loss or denture application can affect oral micro-flora. The general purpose of the current study was to determine Candida species occurrence rate in the oral cavity of denture wearer patients in comparison wi...
