endocarditis and intracardiac infection have been increased recently especially in dialysis dependent renal failure patients. this is usually intractable infection to broad spectrum antibiotic therapy and in most cases surgical intervention was necessary. we have presented 45 years old man with intracardiac infection at the tip of dialysis catheter that after catheter removal intracardiac infec...
conclusions we conclude that a significant percentage of esrd patients undergoing maintenance hd have severe or very severe rls symptoms. the presence of rls is associated to longer durations of dialysis. results of the 139 hd patients enrolled in this study, 60 were female (43.2%) and 79 were male (56.8%), with a mean age of 51.82 ± 13.31 years. the prevalence of rls was 15.8% (22 patients), w...
Four cases of peritonitis caused by the filamentous fungus Paecilomyces variotii in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis are reported. Removal of the Tenckhoff catheter and antifungal chemotherapy led to resolution of symptoms in all cases. Possible contaminating events are discussed, and reported infections with P. variotii are reviewed.
Patients on chronic hemodialysis often portray high serum [K+]. Although dietary excesses are evident in many cases, in others, the cause of hyperkalemia cannot be identified. In such cases, hyperkalemia could result from decreased potassium removal during dialysis. This situation could occur if alkalinization of body fluids during dialysis would drive potassium into the cell, thus decreasing t...
BACKGROUND Neck of femur fractures are associated with high mortality and have increased prevalence in dialysis patients. Delays in operating on dialysis patients can occur as a result of logistical or medical issues; it has previously been shown that delays on operating on neck of femur fractures in the general population results in increased mortality. METHODS Medical records of 27 dialysis...
BACKGROUND Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have symptoms related to severe anemia, edema, and heart failure. Although dialysis improves ESRD syndromes, the optimum timing for initiation of dialysis is unclear. Recent observational studies have suggested that early commencement of dialysis can be harmful. Given that early dialysis may increase the risk of death, avoiding an early st...
Introduction: Hypotension during Hemodialysis often increases mortality in patients undergoing dialysis for a long time. Hypotension is the most frequent adverse event during hemodialysis; therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate hypotension value of patients and present a predictive model using descriptive data mining. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, conducted from M...
Hospice is recognized for providing excellent end-of-life care but may be underused by dialysis patients. Hospice use and related outcomes were measured among dialysis patients, and factors that were associated with hospice use were identified. The 2-yr US Renal Data System dialysis patients who died between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2002, and hospice claims from the Centers for Medicar...
Shorter delivered dialysis times associate with a higher and more difficult to treat blood pressure.
BACKGROUND Shorter delivered dialysis times are associated with increased all-cause mortality. Whether shorter delivered dialysis times also associate with an increase in blood pressure (BP) and reduce the ability of probing dry weight to lower BP is unclear. METHODS Among patients participating in the Dry-Weight Reduction in Hypertensive Hemodialysis Patients (DRIP) trial, interdialytic ambu...
