Gas holdup and mixing time were characterized in a forced circulation internal loop draft-tube reactor (unaerated aspect ratio≈ 6, downcomero-riser cross-sectional area ratio = 0.493) as functions of the forced liquid superficial velocity in the riser (ULr) and the gas superficial velocity in he riser (UGr). Data were obtained in air–water system. The operation ranges were 0≤ULr ≤ 0.051 m/s and...
This paper presents the results of a simulation model designed to estimate aircraft Mission Capable Rates (MCR) for the United States Air Force. This simulation model originated out of the need to estimate the MCR for different modernization schemes to be implemented on the Air Force C-5 Galaxy aircraft. Assigned to the Air Mobility Command (AMC), the C-5 is one of our nations only two strateg...
BACKGROUND: Airlift solid–liquid two-phase partitioning bioreactors (SL-TPPBs) have been shown to be effective for the treatment of gas streams containing benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene (BTEX). The airlift SL-TPPB is a low-energy system that utilizes a sequestering phase of solid silicone rubber beads (10%v/v) that will uptake and release large amounts of BTEX in order to maintain ...
A microfluidic bioreactor for cell co-culture has been developed to study the cytotoxicity of xenobiotics in multiorgan interaction models. In this paper, we investigate the drug metabolism of ifosfamide, an anticancer drug, in liver and its impact on kidney. HepG2/C3A (liver) and MDCK (kidney) cells are cultured in two separate PDMS chambers connected by a perfusion loop mimicking blood flow. ...
To understand the long-term stability of nitrifying granules in a membrane bioreactor (GMBR), module was submerged an airlift reactor to eliminate hydraulic selection pressure that believed be driving force aerobic granulation. The monitoring results showed structure could remain stable for 305 days GMBR without pressure; however, majority granule actually inactive due mass diffusion limitation...
Fermentation can be a powerful tool for developing new sustainable foods with increased nutritional value and fermented microbial biomass derived from filamentous fungi is promising example. This study investigates the profile of edible Aspergillus oryzae produced under submerged fermentation (SmF) using oat flour as substrate. The occurred in 1m3 airlift bioreactor during 48 h at 35 °C fungal ...
The present study investigated the feasibility of bioCO(2) sequestration using Chlorella sorokiniana. It was found that 5% CO(2) (v/v) in air was the most suitable concentration for the growth of this organism. At this concentration, the maximum rate of CO(2) sequestered and the biomass obtained were found to be 1.21 g L(-1)d(-1) and 4.4 g L(-1) respectively. Modeling and simulation of the grow...
