Effective screening for the development of early onset preeclampsia (PE) can be provided in the first-trimester of pregnancy. Screening by a combination of maternal risk factors, uterine artery Doppler, mean arterial pressure, maternal serum pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A, and placental growth factor can identify about 95% of cases of early onset PE for a false-positive rate of 10%.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the potential value of maternal serum placental growth factor (PlGF) in first-trimester screening for trisomy 21 and other major chromosomal abnormalities. METHODS The maternal serum concentration of PlGF at 11 + 0 to 13 + 6 weeks was measured in 609 euploid and 175 chromosomally abnormal pregnancies, including 90 with trisomy 21, 28 with trisomy 18, 19 with trisomy ...

background: pregnancy and accelerated fetal growth always are related with major metabolic changes and body fat redistribution and adiponectin is one of principle adipocyte hormones, so studying adiponectin changes during pregnancy may reveal some hidden parts of fetal metabolism. the aim of this study was to assess adiponectin and leptin levels in umbili cal cord and maternal serum, their rela...

to evaluate the maternal serum dehydroepiandrosterone (dhea) sulfate levels as a factor influencing labor ‘efficiency’ at term and unsuccessful labor induction. this is a prospective study. in this study the mean (± standard error) maternal serum dhea sulfate levels of 90 singleton pregnant women in 3 groups with spontaneous labor, need for augmentation and need for induction were compared.preg...

to evaluate the maternal serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate level as a factor associated with the outcome of labor induction. venous blood was collected from 45 women at the initiation of labor induction. pregnancies complicated by maternal corticosteriod use, anterpartum chorioamnionitis, or cesarean delivery for indications other than arrest disorders, were excluded from analysis. in 42 wom...

BACKGROUND Down syndrome screening is commonly performed in the US using maternal age and three or four second-trimester maternal serum markers that can identify up to 75% of affected pregnancies by offering diagnostic studies to 5% of women. Invasive trophoblast antigen [ITA; hyperglycosylated human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)] is a promising marker that can be measured in urine or serum in t...

In the Prenatal Diagnosis special issue of July 2010, a good prediction was made by the author (Dennis Lo, 2010) on non-invasive methods of diagnosis of fetal anomalies. Non-invasive prenatal diagnoses are useful in the detection of fetal genetic abnormalities, aneuploidies and high-risk pregnancy. Fetal DNA analysis in maternal plasma using single molecule analysis method, no doubt, will defin...

OBJECTIVE To compare the effects, safety, and cost effectiveness of antenatal screening strategies for Down's syndrome. DESIGN Analysis of incremental cost effectiveness. SETTING United Kingdom. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Number of liveborn babies with Down's syndrome, miscarriages due to chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis, health care costs of screening programme, and additional costs...

BACKGROUND A disintegrin and metalloprotease 12 (ADAM12-S) has previously been reported to be significantly reduced in maternal serum from women with fetal aneuploidy early in the first trimester and to significantly improve the quality of risk assessment for fetal trisomy 21 in prenatal screening. The aim of this study was to determine whether ADAM12-S is a useful serum marker for fetal trisom...
