PURPOSE The general purpose of the present study was to examine the link between cohesion and motivational climate in youth sport. The first specific objective was to determine if relationships demonstrated in previous research with adult basketball and handball participants would be replicated in a younger sample and with a more heterogeneous set of sports. This meta-analysis examined the home-field advantage in athletics, with an emphasis on potential moderators. The goal of this research was to quantify the probability of a home victory, thus only studies that included win–loss data were included in the meta-analysis. A significant advantage for home teams was observed across all conditions (Mp = .604); and time era, season length, game type, an...

We give theoretical methods of creating sports schedules where there are multiple venues for the games, and the number of times each team uses each venue should be balanced. A construction for leagues having 2p ≥ 8 teams was given by de Werra, Ekim and Raess. Here we show that feasible schedules exist when the league has an arbitrary even number of teams greater than or equal to 8.

Most NCAA football teams never play each other in a given season, which has made ranking them a long-running and much-debated problem. The official Bowl Championship Series (BCS) standings are determined in equal parts by input from coaches, sports writers, and an average of algorithmic rankings. These standing determine which teams play for the national championship, and, in part, which teams ...

The North American model of resource allocation in professional sports leagues is adapted for English (association) football. The theoretical relationship between revenue and competitive balance is shown to be robust with respect to changes in teams’ objectives and labour market conditions. Empirical revenue functions are reported for 1926-1999. These indicate a shift in the composition of dema...

The reverse order college draft gives the worst teams in the National Football League (NFL) the opportunity to hire the best amateur talent. For it to work effectively, teams must be able to identify the ‘‘best’’ talent. Our study of NFL quarterbacks highlights problems with the draft process. We find only a weak correlation between teams’ evaluations on draft day and subsequent quarterback per...

There are numerous methods to rank sports teams. Each of these methods incorporate different components to determine a ranking system. For example, the Rating Percentage Index (RPI) method considers the weighted average of a team’s winning percentage and its opponents winning percentage [16]. The Elo method assigns each team a rating and when two teams play each other, the rankings change depen...

The purpose of this study was to assess the risk of disordered eating (DE) among female athletes in lean and non-lean sports using the ATHLETE survey. The ATHLETE survey is divided into six different constructs, and a high score indicates a high risk for DE. Eighty-three varsity female athletes from eight Campbell University sports teams completed the survey and a medical history form anonymous...

The sport domain is strongly under-represented in the Linked Open Data Cloud, whereas sport competition results can be linked to already existing entities, such as events, teams, players, and more. The provision of Linked Data about sporting results enables extensive statistics, while connections to further datasets allow enhanced and sophisticated analyses. Moreover, providing sports data as L...
