Since ceftriaxone and itraconazole are highly protein bound, are excreted via a biliary pathway, and are in vitro modulators of the efflux pump P glycoprotein, a pharmacokinetic interaction between these antimicrobial agents can be hypothesized. Therefore, we evaluated the pharmacokinetics of itraconazole and ceftriaxone alone and in combination in a chronic model of catheterized miniature pigs...

In a prospective, multicentre double-blind trial, 151 patients over the age of 65 years were randomly assigned to receive either cefepime 2 g every 12 h for a minimum of 3 days and up to 14 days or ceftriaxone 1 g every 12 h for a minimum of 3 days and up to 14 days. Antibiotics were maintained until 48 h after fever had resolved; no other antibiotics were permitted. The average age in each gro...

Ceftriaxone is a commonly used antibiotic due to some of its advantages. Reversible gallbladder (GB) sludge or stone has been reported after ceftriaxone therapy. Most of these patients have no symptom, but the GB sludge or stone can sometimes cause cholecystitis. We experienced two patients who had newly developed GB stones after ceftriaxone therapy for diverticulitis and pneumonia, and this re...

BACKGROUND Limited data exist on the effectiveness of ceftriaxone plus doxycycline in the treatment of patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). METHODS We performed a retrospective cohort study of all adults hospitalized for pneumonia between January 1999 and July 2001 at an academic medical center. Outcomes were compared for patients with CAP treated with ceftriaxone pl...

The emergence of resistance to antimicrobial agents within the salmonellas is a worldwide and severe problem. A case of treatment failure due to the emergence of resistance to ceftriaxone in Salmonella enterica serotype Anatum was studied. S. enterica serotype Anatum and Escherichia coli, both of which are susceptible to ceftriaxone, were initially isolated from a diabetic patient hospitalized ...

the pharynx is not an ideal site for N. gonorrhoeae growth. From the routine examinations of commercial sex workers during January–March 2009, 40 N. gonorrhoeae were isolated in the clinic, but no other ceftriaxoneresistant strains were isolated. There is no evidence of dissemination of this strain in Kyoto. Three independent molecular subtyping methods indicated that the ceftriaxone-resistant ...

We document the first report of plasmid-encoded CMY-2-type AmpC -lactamase identified among Shigella sonnei isolates resistant to ceftriaxone and obtained after an outbreak of bacillary dysentery in Taiwan. One hundred eighty-two children in two elementary schools in Yu-Li, Taiwan, where an outbreak occurred after a typhoon hit this area in 2001, were enrolled in this study. Clinical and epidem...

Using a rabbit model of meningitis, we sought to determine the efficacy of LY333328, a semisynthetic glycopeptide, in the treatment of cephalosporin-resistant pneumococcal meningitis. LY333328 was administered at a dose of 10 mg/kg of body weight/day, alone and in combination with ceftriaxone at 100 mg/kg/day with or without dexamethasone at 0.25 mg/kg/day. The therapeutic groups were treated w...

The plasma elimination rates of serial 2-g intravenous injections of ceftriaxone were studied in a patient who also was treated with therapeutic plasma exchange pheresis. Plasmapheresis had negligible influence on the total clearance of ceftriaxone.
