PURPOSE Previously reported from this laboratory are two distinct factors responsible for corneal endothelium modulation: basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and the corneal endothelium modulation factor (CEMF) that is released by inflammatory cells. The altered phenotypes mediated by these two distinct factors--marked increase in cell proliferation, cell shape changes, and synthesis of fibri...

PURPOSE To analyze the involvement of the corneal endothelium in uveitis to better understand the formation mechanisms and the keratic precipitate composition. In vivo confocal microscopy images were correlated with ex vivo immunostaining of corneal endothelium from rat eyes with endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU). METHODS EIU was induced in Lewis rats by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection. Slit...
We conducted a randomised prospective controlled study to determine the effects of a glucose glutathione bicarbonate solution (BSS Plus) and a citrate acetate bicarbonate solution (S-MA2) on the corneal endothelium in patients undergoing extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens implantation. One eye of each patient was randomly assigned to receive BSS Plus, and the other ey...
A 72-year-old man had exchange of a foldable silicone multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) by transection, removal, and monofocal IOL replacement. One month after the exchange, irreversible corneal edema developed and penetrating keratoplasty was performed. At the time of the corneal transplant, a small silicone fragment was discovered in and removed from the anterior chamber. Histologic evaluatio...
Corneal endothelium of 121 normal corneas was studied with the clinical specular microscope, and the relationship between cell density, cell morphology, and age was examined. Our observations indicate a decrease in cell density with age in homomegethous endothelium but no such correlation in a polymegethous endothelium.
The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of inducing rat neural crest cells (NCC) to differentiate to functional corneal endothelial cell (CEC)-like cells in vitro. Rat NCC were induced with adult CEC-derived conditioned medium. Immunofluorescence, flow cytometry and real time RT-PCR assay were used to detect expression of the corneal endothelium differentiation marker N-cadheri...
Purpose: To correlate corneal endothelium cell density with dry eye disease compared to an age-matched control group. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 150 eyes of 75 female students aged 19-25 years who did not have any history of eye injuries or eye disease affecting the corneal endothelium cell density, were recruited from KSU Female Campus. They were divided i...
Comparison specular micrographs of infant and adult corneas from cats, cows, dogs, rabbits, and humans demonstrate that a large decrease in central endothelial cell density occurs during maturation of the cornea. Central endothelial cell counts of developing cat, dog, and rabbit corneas decrease rapidly during the first months of life. This rapid decline in endothelial cell density correlates w...
Clinical specular microscopy has indicated that human cell healing occurs by spreading, there is a limited healing reserve, and premature cell loss is the equivalent of a "premature aging" that may lead to later decompensation. This instrument has been useful in studying healing and cell damage from surgery, drugs, and special procedures such as intraocular lens insertion. It pointed out extens...
