Various factors could conceivably promote the accuracy of guesses during a recognition test. Two that we identified in previous studies are forced-choice testing format and high perceptual similarity between the repeat target and novel foil. In restricted circumstances, the relative perceptual fluency of the target can be compared with that of the foil and used as a reliable cue to guide accura...

Recently, Kornell, Hays, and Bjork (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition 35:989-998, 2009) demonstrated that incorrect guessing can benefit subsequent memory to a greater degree than can an equivalent amount of study time. We explored this intriguing finding to determine which factors moderate the advantage of incorrect guessing relative to study. In contrast to t...

A guessing attack on a security protocol is an attack where an attacker guesses a poorly chosen secret (usually a low-entropy user password) and then seeks to verify that guess using other information. Past efforts to address guessing attacks in terms of design or analysis considered only protocols executed in isolation. However, security protocols are rarely executed in isolation and reality i...

We shall show that the consistency of CH+¬(+) and CH+(+)+there are no club guessing sequences on ω1. We shall also prove that ♢ does not imply the existence of a strong club guessing sequence on ω1. §0. Introduction. The principle (+) and its variations were first considered by the second author in [2]. They are very weak club guessing principles. The properties of the principles were largely u...

This paper proposes a statistical mapping-based technique for guessing pronunciations of novel words from their spellings. The technique is based on the automatic determination and utilization of unidirectional mappings between n-tuples of characters and n-tuples of phonemes, and may be viewed as a statistical extension of analogy-based pronunciation guessing algorithms.
