During the MOE/MAR implementation, the University Health Network's IT department faced a range of issues as it attempted to take advantage of recent technological advances and satisfy users within budget constraints. The challenges of doing so in this large, academic hospital organization are identified, drawing on both successful and less successful design and implementation efforts.

1. Introduction. We give a set-theoretic characterization of the topologi-cal «-sphere. In so doing, we use some notions introduced by R. L. Wilder in his summer lectures of 1948 at the University of Michigan. Also an essential use is made' of modified forms of some results [l] of R. H. Bing.

We investigate how the need for evermore programming languages arises, and how to fulfill this need. We show how the gap between building a library using an existing language and constructing a completely new language narrows. In doing so we discuss a few of the past and current research results from the Software Technology group at Utrecht University.
