Cohesive ends of 16-3, a temperate phage of Rhizobium meliloti 41, have been identified as 10-base-long, 3'-protruding complementary G/C-rich sequences. terS and terL encode the two subunits of 16-3 terminase. Significant homologies were detected among the terminase subunits of phage 16-3 and other phages from various ecosystems.
To characterize the geographical distribution of medicago-nodulating rhizobia in western regions of Iran, 950 Sinorhizobium isolates were trapped from a combination of two local alfalfa populations (Hamedani, Nikshahri) together with a foreign cultivar ( Kodi) and soil samples from eight sites across Kurdestan, Kermanshah, Eastern Azarbayjan and Lorestan provinces. Also, a total of 45 isolates ...
The RNA Polymerase Subunit from Sinorhizobium meliloti Can Assemble with RNA Polymerase Subunits from Escherichia coli and Function in Basal and Activated Transcription both In Vivo and In Vitro Melicent C. We determined the structures of Nod factors produced by six different Bradyrhizobium sp. strains nodulating the legume tree Acacia albida (syn. Faidherbia albida). Compounds from all strains were found to be similar, i.e., O-carbamoylated and substituted by an often sulfated methyl fucose and different from compounds produced by Rhizobium-Mesorhizobium-Sinorhizobium strains nodulating other spe...
Expression of the inner membrane protein FoxB (PA2465) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in mutants of Sinorhizobium meliloti that are defective in the utilization of ferrichrome, ferrioxamine B, and schizokinen resulted in the restoration of siderophore utilization. Mutagenesis of foxB in P. aeruginosa did not abolish siderophore utilization, suggesting that the function is redundant.
The genus Ensifer (formerly Sinorhizobium) contains many species able to form nitrogen-fixing nodules on plants of the legume family. Here, we report the 6.1-Mb draft genome sequence of Ensifer sp. strain LCM 4579, with a G+C content of 62.4% and 5,613 candidate protein-encoding genes.
Sinorhizobium fredii is a nitrogen-fixing legume symbiont that stimulates the formation of root nodules. S. fredii nodulation of roots is influenced by Nop proteins, which are secreted through a type III secretion system (T3SS). We demonstrate that S. fredii injects NopP into Vigna unguiculata nodules in a T3SS-dependent manner.
The bacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti is able to use heme as a nutritional iron source. Here, we show that the iron-regulated shmR gene encodes an outer membrane protein required for growth on heme. Furthermore, an shmR mutant is resistant to the toxic heme analog gallium protoporphyrin. Thus, the receptor protein of the heme transport system has been identified in S. meliloti.
