A learning model is considered in terms of formal concept analysis (FCA). This model is generalized for objects represented by sets of graphs with partially ordered labels of vertices and edges (these graphs can be considered as simple conceptual graphs). An algorithm that computes all concepts and the linear (Hasse) diagram of the concept lattice in time linear with respect to the number of co...

The ongoing debate about the identity of the Information Systems (IS) discipline is examined from a new perspective. Two recent studies are contrasted to demonstrate the limits of retrospective analysis for defining the discipline of IS. A new model for discovery transdisciplinary IS research, based on concepts and discourses is suggested. Latent Semantic Analysis is proposed as an approach to ...

It has been recently claimed that the confined structure of the debris from the Sagittarius dwarf implies that the dark-matter halo of our Galaxy should be nearly spherical, in strong contrast with predictions from cold dark-matter (CDM) simulations, where dark halos are found to have typical density axis ratios of 0.6− 0.8. In this letter, numerical simulations are used to show that the Sagitt...

Using numerical simulations of cluster formation in the standard CDM model (SCDM) and in a low-density, flat CDM model with a cosmological constant (LCDM), we investigate the gravitational lensing explanation for the reported associations between background quasars and foreground clusters. Under the thin-lens approximation and the unaffected background hypothesis , we show that the recently det...

Background: Conceptual review is a creative research method for generating new knowledge in the context of a vague and complex concept that helps to explain and clarify the concept, its components and its relation to related concepts. This study aimed to explain the methodology of conceptual review in the health system. Methods: Articles related to the conceptual research method were searched ...

In the last 2 decades, studies on conceptual metaphors have profoundly increased. The development in this field was followed by Lakoff and Johnson's (1980b) work on describing the conceptual role played by metaphors and their correspondence with language and thought. This study aimed to compare conceptual metaphors in Persian and English through a corpus-based approach as well as examining both...

Mathematical cognition, paragon of abstraction, is marked by systematic associations between number and space, often described as “mental number lines.” In three experiments, we demonstrate a novel effect: a sagittal (back-to-front) number line for negative and positive integers. In a paradigm requiring full-body movements, participants judged numerical magnitude (Exp. 1-2) and parity (Exp. 3)....

This paper gives a theoretical framework for clustering a set of conceptual graphs characterized by sparse descriptions. The formed clusters are named in an intelligible manner through the concept of stereotype, based on the notion of default generalization. The cognitive model we propose relies on sets of stereotypes and makes it possible to save data in a structured memory.

The extraction of objects present in photographs is a major problem to tackle when considering photographs retrieval. Such objects (or people) have to be detected in a way to allow retrieval based on concepts and not on physical characteristics like colors or textures. In a way to achieve a reasonable detection rate, in context image analysis has to be used. We propose here to use conceptual gr...

Case-based object recognition requires a general case of the object that should be detected. Real world applications such as the recognition of biological objects in images cannot be solved by one general case. A case-base is necessary to handle the great natural variations in the appearance of these objects. In this paper we will present how to learn a hierarchical case base of general cases. ...
