A new experimental technique for imposing lateral confinement on specimens subjected to high-strain-rate uniaxial compression is being developed. A brief description of the experimental technique, as well as some preliminary experimental results of the technique are presented in this paper. The results show that under lateral confinement, the impact strength of a brittle glass ceramic increases...

Background: Joint trauma and injury are the most common causes of dynamic instability. Dynamic instability has a great effect on the lumbar spine, due to its three-dimensional motions. The greatest amounts of compression and shearing force are imposed at the points of maximum torque and velocity. The changes in these phase angles upon bearing various loads can cause some pathologic conditions. ...

We investigate initiation, growth, and healing of wing cracks in confined silica glass by molecular dynamics simulations. Under dynamic compression, frictional sliding of precrack surfaces nucleates nanovoids which evolve into nanocrack columns at the precrack tip. Nanocrack columns merge to form a wing crack, which grows via coalescence with nanovoids in the direction of maximum compression. L...

We propose a geometry for a piezoelectric SPM sensor that can be used for combined AFM/LFM/STM. The sensor utilises symmetry to provide a lateral mode without the need to excite torsional modes. The symmetry allows normal and lateral motion to be completely isolated, even when introducing large tips to tune the dynamic properties to optimal values.

Three results pertaining to lateral control of heavy duty vehicles on Automated Highway System are presented. First, a time domain, frequency domain and pole/zero analysis of the linearized model for lateral control of tractor-trailer vehicles is presented. The steering response subject to variation of speed, road adhesion and look-ahead distance is studied. Based on the analysis, a simple base...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Many authors have reported the increase in vertebral body height after vertebroplasty; if the fractured vertebrae are mobile, we should be able to demonstrate their mobility in radiographs. The purpose of this study was to discover the diagnostic value of dynamic radiographs and the percentage of mobile vertebrae in painful VCFs. MATERIALS AND METHODS From September 200...

OBJECTIVE To analyze intra and interobserver agreement of two radiographic methods for evaluation of posterolateral lumbar arthrodesis. METHODS Twenty patients undergoing instrumented posterolateral fusion were evaluated by anteroposterior and dynamic lateral radiographs in maximal flexion and extension. The images were evaluated initially by 6 orthopedic surgeons, and after 8 weeks, reassess...

We test here a previously proposed hypothesis about lateral heterogeneity of cell membranes, a model predicting that heterogeneity is maintained by a combination of delivery and intake of molecules with barriers to lateral free diffusion. To test the validity of the model, we observed green fluorescent protein tagged major histocompatibility complex class I patches on the plasma membrane of mou...

In humans, the lateral movement of an acoustic source produces dynamic changes in the relative sound-pressure level and time of arrival of the acoustic wave at the 2 ears. The dynamic nature of these cues is assumed to play an important role in the perception of lateral motion. A phenomenon of auditory motion is reported whose lateral direction and relative velocity may be specified while inter...

Objective: With regard to the effects of postural fatigue on the amount of participation in sport activities and as this may result in impaired motor functioning, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of fatigue on static and dynamic balance in karate kata and kumite elite men. Methods: The statistical population consist of all karate kata and kumite National Karate team members ...
