This study reports on the molecular identification of fish species from processed products which had a priori been classified as belonging to 5 important species in Iran for human consumption. DNA barcoding using direct sequencing of an approximately 650bp of mitochondrial Cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene revealed incorrect labeling of Narrow-barred Spanish mackerel samples. High occurre...

As the global market for fisheries and aquaculture products expands, mislabeling of these products has become a growing concern in the food safety arena. Molecular species identification techniques hold the potential for rapid, accurate assessment of proper labeling. Here we developed and evaluated DNA barcodes for use in differentiating United States domestic and imported catfish species. Firs...

Concern about possible adverse effects caused by the inadvertent exposure of humans and wildlife to endocrine-active chemicals, has led some countries to develop an in vivo-in vitro screening program for endocrine effects. In this paper, a previously described estrogen-inducible recombinant yeast strain (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is used to investigate a number of issues that could potentially ...

In this paper, we study the effectiveness of phishing blacklists. We used 191 fresh phish that were less than 30 minutes old to conduct two tests on eight anti-phishing toolbars. We found that 63% of the phishing campaigns in our dataset lasted less than two hours. Blacklists were ineffective when protecting users initially, as most of them caught less than 20% of phish at hour zero. We also fo...

Authentication and traceability of extra virgin olive oil is a challenging research task due to the complexity of fraudulent practices. In this context, the monovarietal olive oils of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) require new tests and cutting edge analytical technologies to detect mislabeling and misleading origin. Toward this direction, DNA-...

Protein existing as an ensemble of structures, called intrinsically disordered, has been shown to be responsible for a wide variety of biological functions and to be common in nature. Here we focus on improving sequence-based predictions of long (>30 amino acid residues) regions lacking specific 3-D structure by means of four new neural-network-based Predictors Of Natural Disordered Regions (PO...
